Hi Big M...been gone awhile but I read your post about the Lincoln gun show and laughed a little....

I agree with all you say, especially about the common everyday, easily available stuff.

On the other hand I was at the Ft Calhoun gun shown, I had two tables. All lever action rifles. Eighteen of them, each and every one in nearly pristine condition and in some rare calibers: 375 and 356.

Each unique for that model; for example a pre-C-Blt 22"/444, pistol grip with BALLARD RIFLING, original bland Walnut stocks were replaced with Marlin checkered Walnut stocks; and owner told me he "never fired a round down the barrel!" Another example: One of my levers in 375, has two of the nicest looking scenes engraved on both sides of the receiver by a Father/Son team in Oklahoma (have documentation) who engraved guns for world diplomats, I was told....

Not one single one of my 18 levers are currently in production, nor will they be in the near or forseeable future. It took me hours, days, weeks, months and in a few cases years to find these levers.

Each and everyone of was priced below real market value. Sure 'real market' value applys to location, this I am aware of but 9 out of 10 prospects coming thru the doors: 1) don't have a clue about levers;
2) Most shooters are enamored with bolt guns vs levers and some even disdain the idea of a lever ( a lot they know); 3) my prices were too high for them....they did not have a clue and after my nearly 40 years in this game THEY IN FACT DID NOT HAVE A CLUE.

Another example: my new-in-box Marlin 336D, try finding one for less than $550; heck those who asked about this 1 of only 1,000 ever to be made rifles did not even know they ever existed. In their defense, they are -most likely- not a lever geek, they really don't know what their missing out on.

Over all your hits are right on....most of those setting up at a show...are abit over zealous in their pricing while on the other hand there are in fact too many bottom feeders i.e. they want something for nothing, yet when these bottom feeders walk in the door with a common 870/12ga and they want to sell or trade, then an epihany occurs suddenly 'their' 870 is UNIQUE.

I've been in the aisle and behind the table. Heard all kinds of lies and told just as many. .. and can hold my own with the best tale-tellers around.
It boils down to just a few characteristics when I buy or when I sell:

It's the tone-of-the-teller behind each story. I like the way he tells a story or present his case and if he's knowledgable about what he tells. Secondly, over the years I have seen and remembered many faces of those going to gun shows. And inevitably someone behind the table knows the person in the aisle and they'll say: that guy is a hard nosed customer but he's smart, knows the game and won't play kids games when he wants to buy, he'll not waste your time and if the price makes both happy he'll pay in cash and not a frigg'n check....

A tip for any gun show: CASH, leave your check book at home.

One of these days I'm gonna shoot my 336D....

Oh by the way guess what I found some time ago...a rem 7600, as new with variable scope...$325..... in 35 Remington.... now talk about a hard to find rifle...

Hope to see you in Beatrice...

regards...

I know where there's 2 model 336Ds for $479.

Nobody has a corner on the gun knowledge or availability market. Anybody on either side of the table has the right to think a price is high. If someone gets bent out of shape because a guy tells him his price is high, he's in the wrong business.

tell me where these 336D's are at.

"No body has a corner on the gun knowledge or availability market"

True and in a broad generalization, I agree completely.

But when it comes to one who has a broad and expansive and correct knowledge of a particular model.....your generalization does not necessarily bear truth!

The analogy is a Dr in general practice vs a heart specialist..

I never get bent out of shape because a price appears to be to high...in most cases in a few months a price will be even higher....heheheeee, then when hunting season is over, and gun fervor subsides, prices decline but over all prices will climb, hardly noticable to all but the most serious gun afficianado

If I really knew 10 per cent of what I thought I know, I'd only be half as smart as I really am.... :(

I'm sorry gunpowder, but I'm going to keep the location of those Ds to myself this time. I would rather they be sold to someone interested in owning them and using them than someone interested only in trying to resell them at a high price for profit.

What's there 2 b srry about :?:

Only thing you need to consider is your presumption about another's motive when in fact you don't have first-hand-knowledge about some one else's motive!

Big Redhead, I have to agree with gunpowder. That was the first thing I thought of while reading your post - I didn't see anywhere that gunpowder's motive was to resell and was wondering how you came up with that! ! !

I have nothing against gunpowder, and maybe I'm wrong about him wanting to buy up the Ds just to resell them for profit. But the very first post on this thread is all about gunpowder's tables at a gun show where he was trying to sell Marlin rifles, including a 336D. I have nothing against him or selling guns. I would just rather someone else buy the Ds that I am privy to - someone that wants them. There are more than a one members of this forum that have me to thank for turning them on to decent deals on Marlins. They bought them because they wanted them. Now they have them, and they like them. Everyone is happy.

I intended no offense.

Gunpowder/Beltloop et. al,

You're always buying and selling Marlins/other guns.....nothing wrong with that unless you're portraying yourself as lever action fan looking for a deal for yourself, instead of the dealer you are.

I was not offended; you're a straight shooter and I responded with a legitimate question, altho I probably could have asked the question or written the statement in a better way...
