Welcome aboard from the high plains of Colorado. That's a fine rifle you received, looked at it's near twin this weekend.
The threaded barrel would most likley be for a suppressor. They were available to the average sportsman way back when.
A google search will likley turn up some info.

Welcome to the forums from the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee! You have an old Model 336 from the 50s, judging from the shape of the wood and the front of the lever. What is the first letter of the serial number? This will tell us what year it was made. That surface rust should clean up pretty good. That's one great keepsake!
