I have a H&R Topper shotgun, 12 Guage single shot. It was my first gun and I received it for my 15th birthday 23 years ago. I wandered through a lot of sagebrush with it and our beagle looking for bunnies.

The transfer bar broke once many years ago and I had it fixed. It broke again several years ago when a friend borrowed it and I never fixed it. My older boy is almost old enough to begin hunting birds and I am thinking about getting it fixed for him to use.

1. How difficult is it to fix these? Dare I attempt to fix it?

2. Should I send it to H&R or have a local gunsmith do it?

3. Is there a more permanant solution for fixing it (I have heard it is an inherent weakness in the gun.)?

Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn't hurt to give em a call or email them the particulars including serial number. You may be able to get the lifter and striker as they are called at Brownells.com or e-gunparts.com Both list parts, although they may not have them in stock. Perklo has R&R of the trigger group in .pdf format for download at his web site below if you wanta try it yourself. Otherwise, any gunsmith should be able to fix it for ya.
