Gold Lettering How did Marlin do it?

4332 Views 27 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  jstanfield103
I have a 1967 Marlin golden 39A Mountie. The Gold lettering has worn off and I would Love to redo it. This is my first ever Marlin, I have always wanted a Marlin but could not afford it. I have always used a Henry, then sold it, I decided then as soon as I could afford another 22 LR. it would be a Marlin. I have not recieved it yet, and yes I paid way to much for it but I would not have been happy with anything less. I have read on the internet and also I have used grease marker but did not like it. I would like to know what Marlin uses for the Gold Lettering? Be kind first post to this site, and Love all the info this site has.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure how Marlin does it, but I got a used 39A that the gold lettering was a bit faded, I used a yellow paint marker made by Faber Castell, oil based fine line, basically traced over the lettering and wiped off the excess. I made sure I cleaned and degreaser the worn lettering first.
So far it seems to be holding up very well, I compared it to another model 39 and you can't tell the difference.
So my first post to this site will be in response to your first post. By the way--I like this site too and have learned a lot here. The Midway USA catalog lists a "Gold Inlay Filling Kit." You can probably go to the website and look it up--product number 720-160. It is about $16. I managed to rub the gold out of my son's Beretta shotgun by being too energetic with some Flitz metal polish one day. I might try this and see if I can fix my error. Good luck.
The Gold filling is Gold Leaf paint....... Paint it on,and wipe it off........ You can probably buy a small bottle of gold leaf paint in any hobbie or Craft store.

Tom is correct. Any craft store sells it. A. C. Moore has it if there is one near you.
Thanks for all the coments, I see that there is vehicle leaf gold touch up. I believe that I will try that and see how it does.

Forster also sells a gold inlay lettering kit:

And here's a video of how it's used:

Thanks SilverBow that looks promising, I liked the video, looks easy.
Go with Tomray's recommendation. I don't know him personally, but I believe he's an ex-Marlin employee.

Hi 1895G:

Thanks, I am very, very happy with my Model 39 CL (made in 1970).

I had to take it to a local gunsmith to show me how to break it down for cleaning, and from the like new appearance of the "innards" the gunsmith said he doubted if a box (or brick?) of shells had been run thru the 41 year old CL because their was simply no wear showing..

Gotta love that..

Best Wishes,

Jesse
No I did not know that the Mountie broke down any diffrent. Thanks! When I recieve it I will try both but unsure of the second screw(which screw you are talking about) I need to find an online owners manual for the Mountie or maybe Marlin can send me one? If anybody knows where to get one or down load one please let me know.
Post Deleted. Bad information.

Thanks!

Trust me on this.

Oh yeah.. You might already know this, but the Mountie does NOT break down for cleaning in the same manner as the 39A... On the 39A it's just basically unscrew the big screw on the right side of the receiver.. On the Mountie there are TWO screws that must be loosened.. The regular big screw on the right side does not come all the way out, but the small screw on the opposite side at the back that holds the stock on at that point must be removed completely.

Please don't ask me how I discovered the difference.. :-[

Best Wishes, and good shootin'..

Jesse

P.S. I'll give you a hint... You can bang the barrel of your Mountie on the pad on the table until the cows come home (dairy or beef) and that sucker is not coming apart until you loosen both screws correctly as I'm sure an owners manual would have told me.

IF I had an owners manual.

Jesse,
Sorry, but you are Mistaken.............You haven't discovered anything!............The screw you are referring to, is the carrier pivot screw.......
It is on EVERY Model 39...................There is NO need to remove that screw for taking ANY 39, be it a 39A or 39M down into two pieces............Don't tell me yours is different...........it just ain't so......................

Tomray,

It's hard for someone with a little knowledge (like myself) take issue with what someone with obviously MORE knowledge on the same subject says, so I'll defer to what you say.

But, whatever the reason, MY Model 39 was no where near coming apart into two pieces until after that 2nd screw was removed.

Now..

My CL is over 40 years old, and from the appearance of the insides it would seem it had NEVER been broken down for cleaning, and had been shot very, very little.

Perhaps that is responsible for my being unable to break it into two parts, as described in the manual for my 39A.

Anyway, I love my Model 39 and always love learning more about it, as right now, I don't know squat..

Thanks!

Jesse
Jesse,

IF,.............you have little knowledge of the 39, or other Marlins, as you stated.............Please don't post ERRONIOUS statements in such a positive fashion on this forum....................

It only leads others to follow your directives.............and make costly mistakes, with their own firearms............

If your gunsmith led you to the conclusion that two screws MUST be removed to take down your 39M or 39A..............Find another Gunsmith!...................That one doesn't know much about Marlins.........

I worked for Marlin for more than 10 years, as a Manufacturing Engineer, and "6 Sigma Green Belt Certified" Trouble Shooter/Problem solver, for 336,1894,1895 and Model 39 rifles.................

I know what I'm talking about, here..................

Well Thomas,

I've already acknowledged my ignorance, and apologized for spreading misinformation...

No doubt you know much more about the way to break down a 39A, Mountie, CL, whatever than I do, and I appreciate your coming here to take me to task for my error.

What you obviously have in experience in this matter is only excelled by your LACK of tact in how you chose to correct me on it.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

P.S. I believe it's spelled "erroneous"... ;)

TomRay appreciate you're advice. It is nice to know that you actually did work for Marlin. Thanks for the input.
Hey, Jesse,

Lack of tact? .............I don't agree...You stated very directly, that the 39M had two screws to release to take it down........You are wrong!.........

I'm not taking you to task..............I'm not taking you anywhere........ You were leading others, that 39M's were different than other 39's................NOT So.............

Go back and re-read your original posts......................

Re: erronious..............Maybe your spell checker works better than mine..........No matter...........but I'll make note of that.......

No dis-respect was meant in my post to you..............If you took my post as dis-respect, and lack of tack...............That's in your interpretation of what I wrote.........I did say "Sorry", and I did say "Please"...........

I've been here a looong time...........I don't come here to dis-respect others, and others will tell you so........
You took my post wrong.........I didn't make the same mistake in reading yours.............

Enjoy the rest of the weekend,

Tom
