Is the date of manufacture for a Glenfield determined the same way as a Marlin? This is for a Model 60.

i dont understand why marlins serial numbers decrease as you look at newer models. I have a model 60 the number is 20xxxxxx. I supose it was made in 1980. Why is it that a gun made in 81 has the num. 19xxxxxx?

glenfield 60 serial numbers

Year of manufacture can be determined from 1946-1968 by the following letter/numeral prefixes: 1946-C, 1947-D, 1948-E, 1949-F, 1950-G, 1951-H, 1952-J, 1953-K, 1954-L, 1955-M, 1956-N, 1957-P, 1958-R, 1959-S, 1960-T, 1961-U, 1962-V, 1963-W, 1964-Y,Z, 1965-AA, 1966-AB, 1967-AC, 1968-AD, 1969-69, 1970-70, 1971-71, 1972-72. Starting in 1973, the year can be determined by subtracting the first 2 numbers of the serial number from 100.

I came into possession one of the Model 60s. It's been very poorly cared for, rust outside and lots of gunk inside. After some initial removal of rust I found it says on the barrel: GLENFIELD MOD 60 Marlin Firearms CO North Haven Conn USA CAL 22LR ONLY. I broke it down and am cleaning internals and removing rust from barrel and going to sand down the stock. Using it as a learning experience as I've never tried to clean up/restore a gun in such rough condition. To this point, internally it looks operational but very dirty. The only identifying number I've found so far is stamped externally and I assume that is the serial number. Correct? The number is 24253208. According to the posts above that would make it made in 1976 (100-24). The barrel is 22 inches long and the tube is roughly 3/8in shorter than the barrel. I loaded the tube but it appears to hold only 15 rds. Based on some other reading online that seems to be a contradiction as I thought it wasn't until the mid 80s that the Mod 60 moved to a 15 rd tube. Any thoughts on this apparent contradiction? Have I found inaccurate info online? (Like that never happens!) Thanks in advance for any replies.

I just picked up a Glenfield Mod 60 with serial number 70260078. Did they change there way of dating them somewhere along the way. I have another one that shows it was made in 1973 which is when I bought it.

From 68 to 72 the first two numbers are the YOM, then they went to the 100- method.
