I'm picking up a new Marlin 1895 22" 45-70 this week. We will be permitted to use various straight walled cartridge rifles in Ohio for deer this fall. I've read the horror stories. I hope I'm lucky for once in my life. Thinking about a DNZ medium mount and a Burris 2-7x Fullfield scope.

Previous years the following long guns were legal during the whitetail gun season in Ohio.

Shotguns with slugs, 410 bore to 10 ga.

Muzzleloaders 38 cal and larger

Pistols, .357" and larger OD bullets, straightwall only, no bottlenecks.

The above list is still good for this fall's deer season plus there is a limited list of straight wall (taper cases, no bottlenecks) that will be legal. 45-70, 444M, 375W, 44mag & 357mag are on the list and have driven up the prices of rifles chambered in these calibers.

Welcome to the forum Robert!! I have a new Remlin myself and I was fortunately very lucky. There are youtube videos that help you to go over the gun and show where to polish to get a smoother action. Just recently purchased a JM stamped 45-70 and it has an incredibly smooth action. I love them both and am sure you will enjoy that new shoulder cannon. Congrats and again welcome to the forum!!

Thanks for the well wishes and welcome!! I'll be picking up the Marlin tomorrow. I'll get some pics up soon after I have it home. I also hunt WV black bear every September. If all works out this 45-70 could be going along with me and the Winchester model 88 .308 I usually hunt with down there.

I just picked up a new 1895 last weekend also, I havn't shot it yet, but looking her over good the only complaint I have as of now is the checkering on the stock looks like crap almost like they did the checkering and then almost sanded it half way off

Hey Robert, I just got a 1895 GBL yesterday and it's good to go so you will probably happy.Think positive! I'll be hunting the Wayne National Forest come fall,I'm only a10 minute drive away,big deer in southern Ohio. Oh yeah, my Dad bought an SS model last summer and it's also fine. Let us know how it goes.

Hey Plumbernator! I just got my 1976 Marlin JM 1895 45-70 about a month ago. Very slick action and shoots better than I do. I put Skinner Alaskan sights on it and am very well pleased. Loooong sight plane! Just a side note - I just received a 1976 Marlin catalog in the mail which has our rifle on the front cover. The 1895 45-70 sold for just under $200., and the .444 was less than $150. If Marlin thought our rifle was worth 25% more than a .444, that says something!

I have a Leupold Vari-XII 2-7 x 32 on the 450 Marlin and a Bushnell 2-7 X 32 on the 45-70. I seem to have fallen into a trend....
I had tried a 3-9 x 40 but found that in order to mount the scope, it set too high off of the stock cheek for me. I know it is not made, but my "wishlist' scope would be a 4-8 x 32.

I put a 2-7 Burris on mine just in the interest of saving weight.... but honestly, I prefer either 4x12 for most rifles... 3x9 at a minimum.

The rifle seems good to go so far. The checkering isn't the greatest as was mentioned but I cycled several rounds through it without incident. Hope to get it to the range soon

Quick question:

I'm planning on mounting either a Nikon 2-7x32mm scope or a Burris Fullfield II 2-7x35mm scope on the 1895. Will the DNZ medium mount give me enough clearance?
