As little boys we grew up wanting one of those fancy BB guns from America - the ones with a lever loading action - we had BSA No 1 pellet guns because that's all we could get there.

Well it has been close on 35 years later and I finally got my cowboy gun - a 45-70 1895GBL

I Wanted to introduce myself, I'm a professional hunter out of Zambia - live in Denver for the off season and now eagerly reading up on loads for the 45-70 that I can try in Africa. I'll be asking the experts on this forum a little later on.

This is truly an amazing resource so firstly thanks for all the info. on this site and secondly - howdy!

Welcome from Tennessee. Go down to the 45-70 forum and you'll find a couple of guys who actually hunted in Africa with a 45-70.

Thanks to everyone,

I'm off to Mozambique in May for a 4 month stint - will post pictures of my attempts at big game with the 45-70. I currently carry a 416 rigby so my trackers will be close on hand with that.

In the meantime I'm going to try and come up with a good load for this caliber in Africa - trying to avoid the problems of compressed loads in hot weather like the .458 magnum has. Not sure if I can achieve this with 460 - 525 grain bullets?
