Dummy screws/plugs ....

Dummy screws or plugs ... that's what I call them anyways.

You know, the holes left on the top of your rifle once you remove the mounts? The little screws you plug those holes with that used to be in there from the factory before the guy you bought the rifle from threw them away and mounted his $50.00 walmart scope?

That's where I am. Bought a nice little rifle - not a very good piece of glass. I thought I had some spare dummy screws but I guess I've used all I have over my years of buying used rifles.

Does anyone know a good source for dummy screws to plug these pre-tapped holes? I've tried Brownell's and Numrich and googled for some others who all appear to be out of stock.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance guys.

Call local gunsmiths and local gun stores. I bought a number of dummy screws from a local gun smith and he charged me a dollar a screw. Midway and Brownell usually charge about 3 bucks a pop. It costs them money to bag them and tag them so its not cheap. Sometimes LGS that mount scopes have those screws too.

Great idea Mike ... thank you. I live a long ways away from any major city or gun shop, but I'm in the city often enough to go by and visit with a couple I know - that's a good idea.

I got 2 sets at my LGS... They have a coffee can full of take offs from when they mount scopes for customers... I had the dubious honor of digging through 1000's of screws until I found the 8 I wanted... When I asked how much for these 8, the guy said, "stick 'em in your pocket"... Gotta love being a regular at the LGS...

oh yes, I like the guys in my local store. I stop in every now and then just to look, sometimes snag a great used gun. They remember and they do like to help.

Andy at Skinner sights offers plug screws in Marlin sizes in black/blue and stainless. And they are cheap.

While you are at it, toss in a spare front sight to justify the postage. :)
