Mine own approach to the VA is that --Even if you do not regard them as Enemy, you must always guard against claiming them Friend !!

I've been a contributing member of www.Hadit.com for over 10 years, and veterans have a certain, eternal place in my heart. Thank you to all Brother's and Sisters, whom have kept our freedom. Ladycolt, ADAF 80-86, Medical Technition, Wilford Hall Medical Center, Izmir, Turkey, Beale AFB.

I don't know if it's still going on, but when I got out they neglected to tell me to go to the VA and get a Medical & Dental exam & get registered for Veteran's Preference before the 90-day time limit expired...if it weren't for an old Vet on the bus back home, I'd have never known and would have missed the deadline.

He told me, "As soon as you get home, go the VERY NEXT DAY so you don't forget about it. Otherwise, you are completely shafted"

Times may change, but bureaucrats & those pogues that advise you during your retirement paperwork are still weasels.

After 14 year of service a tour in the sand in 91 it took the military just 20 min to Medicaly Discharge me (not fit for world wide duty) and send me on my way. When I went to the VA, other than having to see me because I'm a Gulf War vet, they didn't seem interested. I can't fight it anymore, it was destroying my life. Now even the Seziures have stopped. I would love to get something for my time, but I don't know if I could handle the fight again. It's bad when the organization your sapposed to trust puts you through more grief that the enemy.

Thanks. Love the site

I went to the VA just today . Lucky for me I'm still in pretty good shape . Don't smoke , drink or use drugs except for the Blood Pressure meds the VA gives me so I can keep my CDL Class "A" license . So today my doc goes on a tirade about those a$$holes in Prescott not being able to replace the people they lose . We HAD 3 doctors and a Nurse Practitioner and the NP left with a months notice . Now Prescott in it's infinite wisdom claims she can't be replaced for 2 YEARS . She was driving 70 miles each way every day so she bailed . The DR. that left before her claimed there were no "arts" in Kingman AZ . No theater , opera etc. .
Well , I will admit that there just might be a problem here . It's mostly a retirement area BUT there are TONS of veterans . The Docs that do come to town are mostly from the middle east and all have specialities . There seems to be a great shortage of good old fashioned GP docs to work here . We now have a 5 doctor workload with 3 docs . Do the math . I had the bright idea of going to nursing school when I moved here and if I could swing a Masters I could be a NP also . An insight to the politics at the nursing school here put a hard stop to my illusions of grandeur . We need more docs like mine . Blue jeans , cowboy boots and knows their stuff .

Of course I do nt trust the VA! they are the most disconnected, confused, and innefficent department of the government. We have to do all the work our selves if we want anything,,,,, thats why I am using my chapter31 to go to college to become a vet rep and try to actualy help!

Employees traveling 50+ miles one-way are paid $.52 per mile. You can replace employees even when the other employee is still working...don't know where they came up with that. Providers can be brought to the podunk towns that do not have "culture" if the VA asks...most do.

First of all she flat didn't want to drive that far no matter what . It filled a gap in her schedule since her regular gig is going to remote locations for a few months for really big bucks . As far as replacement . It sounds like the VA has a list and we are down closer to the bottom . We have wait our turn which looks to be a ways down the road .

Well dozlert, I'm so glad that you know everything I've done or tried to do with the VA...Why would it have to be that I've done the wrong thing when I tried to get help through the VA? Gee, we all know that every VSO or VA is looking out for my welfare. I've been told that the PTSD is Sub thresh-hold, and that the gunshot wounds are considered indirect fire. I guess I should have gotten the dude's name and address while we were trying to kill each other! Let's see, what they think about the screws they put in my shoulders, because the sockets were fractured, and while we are on it what do we do about the fact that the Air Force Medical records are missing reports from the Flight Surgen?
But, I am so glad that you know that I didn't do it right and I need to talk to someone. The VA could careless about what they do The VA Hospital said it was Seziures while I was in the service and then they took my ability to drive away,My job in the AF, and when I asked how do I get help so I could keep my house they said they didn't handle that side of the issue they just did the medical end, and the side that did handle the dissability didn't know how to represent my type of dissability.

I've heard it said that the VA gives vets a second opportunity to give their lives for their country. I think the overall quality of care probably varies with the locale. During the Vietnam war, the VA was one large horror story.

I'm a disabled veteran and I visit the Northport (LI, NY) facility perhaps once yearly. To be honest, I'm treated with respect, they try to stay on schedule and the care has been good. Other than the facility not having enough parking, I think the overall care offered is very competent and I'm not going to nitpick them for the sake of finding something to bitch about.

The VA may have taken care of many of your ailments, but what specific area do you have a service connected disability for...that is their main concern. Transfer of your medical records should be largely your responsibity. I also spent 28 years AF BTW. Your VSO should be able to assist you with VA home loans, etc. The VA hospital will not be able to help you with that.

If nothing else, the VA gives you a glimpse of the future. They are a classic example of "social medicine". You have a government agency that must provide a service and does so by contracting services out. They also suffer under the never ending regulations that come out of washington. To be fair, they are a service with finite resources that must provide for an ever expanding number of clients. Private physicians can simply stop accepting patients if they feel they have all they can handle - the VA cannot. They must accept the ever growing base of veterans. It's not a perfect system, some parts work better than others, but I feel they genuinely try to provide good care. ;)

The VA has been jerking me around ever since I retired in 92.

After years you just dont care any more
Don't give up. There are good folks at the VA that genuinely want to help our Veterans.
The shame of it is that the decision makers in the higher positions are not of the same mindset as those helpful , compassionate souls closer to the bottom . Think of it as Mother Theresa at the bottom and Obama at the top .

In 1982 I went for the VA suggested Agent Orange exam. I was lied to by a nurse practioner who was "doing a survey for my own studies" and asked all sorts of personal, invasive, questions that ended up in my health records. The records they won't allow you to see. A buddy who worked in the clinic photocopied them and smuggled them out for me.
Also in those records is a notation "this veteran doesn't keep appointments", a reference to being jacked around and made to come back day after day to see diferent "specialists" about my Agent Orange exposure. After losing several days of work, I gave up and went away, just like they planned.
By the time I got help for my PTSD in 1986, the powers that be recognized they had a problem and started the Vet Center program for PTSD. The Vet Center is part of, but separate from, the VA, because they knew how us Nam vets regarded the losers who ran the VA Clinics.
It will be a cold day in hell before I visit the VA health system.

I was told I'd have free medical care for life because I was seperated for medical reasons and have a high disability rating. I've been treated at the VA hospital 4 times: I got MRSA twice. Both times the VA misdiagnosed it, and I had to goto a private urgent care center to get the proper treatment. I'm never going back to that place again.
