At the range today I shot 22 LR ammo through my 39A, and then my Ruger Single Six. The 39A has a 24" barrel, the Single Six a 5.5" barrel. Here are the results:

39A - Average velocity - 1230 fps

Single Six - Average velocity - 981 fps.

This was Federal Champion 36 gr hollow point ammo. The listed velocity is 1260. Close out of the 39A.

Then I shot some 22 Magnum rounds through the Single Six. This was CCI Maxi-Mag 40 gr HP listed at 1910 fps.

Single Six - Average velocity - 1360 fps.

I didn't have a 22 mag. rifle with me to see what the comparison is, but it looks like the 22 mag suffers worse than the 22 LR out of the short barrel. I figure it's going to be around 500 fps vs the 250 fps for the 22 LR.

Hal, I have no proof but my theory is that the 24" barrel slows ammo down a bit.

The tiny powder charge is burnt up and totally expanded well before 24". It would explain why, when tested against other rifles with shorter barrels and shooting the same ammo, the 39A has lower velocities.

Do you have a 39M/Mountie you can chronie at the same time?

18" is supposed to be the optimum for 22 LR velocity. Somebody should test it.

We chroned 22LR last year. We used two rifles, a 1979 Marlin 60 & a Remy 522.
The shorter barreled Remy shot 100-150fps faster than the Marlin.

CCI stingers were faster than Aquila and every other round we tried, in both rifles.
