I'd read that it was hard to use cast bullets in a 300 Savage due to the short neck. So I tried some plinking loads made with Unique with the Lee C309-170-F cast bullet today out of my 1946 Savage 99EG. The bullets did seat a bit below the case neck, but the results were pretty good. Pic of the 50yd target and the rifle.

I've run 100 to 120 gr. cast bullets over 5.0 gr. of Unique for plinkers in the 30-30, .308 Win. and 30-06. Reasonably accurate and do a dirty deed on small game.

My buddy did up a bunch of the the Lee 309-170 gr boolits but I couldn't get them to shoot worth squat out of a 1927 99H 30-30. I was pushing them at 1600 FPS MV to 1700 FPS MV levels--tried IMR-4198 and another powder which I can't recall at the moment. Its great to see yours is shootin' great!

Time to work up a hunting load. I have IMR 3031, H4198 and W748 (others, too, but these are likely candidates). I have some Cast load manual data for the 3031 and W748 . Have not found any data for H4198 for cast, but it's likely not far off of IRM 4198; will keep looking. I'll likely start with the IMR 3031.

I have a squirrel load for 100gr 1/2 jackets / IMR-4198 for 300sav & 308win. They are same load will have to look up charge. I didn’t come up with this load, it came out of gun magazine in late 60s. I cut out page with data and saved it. It has light loads for most popular cartridges.

I would enjoy looking at that data if you could post a picture of the page !

A bullet worthy of testing in the short necked 300 Savage is the Lee 160rain or so pointed bullet designed for the AK 7.62X39 cartridge. I have that mold and the pointed bullet has its uses.

I have that bullet loaded in some 303 Savage cases over AA 2015 powder. Waiting for a little warmer day to shoot at the range !

Just an interim update. 1946 Savage 99EG 300 Savage. Cast bullet (Lee C309-170-F). With uncrimped, lubed bullets and the short neck of the 300 Sav my velocity spread was over 150fps, so I tried a light crimp with a Lee Factory crimp die. The crimp really helped lower the velocity spread. Testing with IMR 3031 I'm currently at a 100 yd group just under 3" with average velocity 1958fps and extreme spread of 54fps. I think I'll slow it down a bit and see if the group tightens up. All my whitetail shots are under 100 yds, so this load would work.

Decided to give H4895 a try. Started with a 60% load and fired a 2.5" group with average velocity 1540fps. Bumped that up to a 70% load and got this

nice 1.75" 100yd group this evening with average velocity 1924fps. Very pleased. Now I have to cast some softer bullets and get this load tested/tweaked for deer season. Using Lee's C309-170-F bullet. 1946 99EG. In case you are wondering where shots 1-3 are ... I had to come down "many' clicks on the 1949 Weaver K4 1st series scope to get this load on paper from where the scope was set with prior 60% load.
