I have watched some older gents covering a wood deck with canvas and then painting it with porch and deck enamel. It seemed to last and be durable/waterproof.

They put 3 or so coats of enamel on the canvas it almost took on a rubber like look.They said it would last a few years and could be recoated has needed but it sure wouldn't breath.
