hello everyone, new to the forum, so hello from michigan

anyway, just bought back my dads old marlin 336, wondering where i find the serial on the gun, nothing on the barrel, just says marlin 336
a. cal. 30-30

on the opposite side of the barrel is a oval with jm in it?

there are some letters and numbers under the lever, is that the serial numbers?

anybody got a link so i can see what year my gun is? a link for serial numbers..

Welcome to MO! You'll find lots of info regarding Marlins right here: http://www.marlinowners.com/forums/index.php/board,91.0.html

The Reference forum is packed with all kinds of good stuff, pull up a chair and commence to reading. I will give you a heads up...seems the boys like pics, so putting up a couple would be nice if you can and also will help in Id-ing your rifle. Sounds like you may have a older Marlin, recent Marlins had the serial number on the top tang, older ones under the lever and older still near the front of the receiver on the bottom. The newest have the number stamped in the left side of the reveiver. Hope this helps, normally YOM can be determined by subtracting the first two numbers from 2000 to get the year it was made. ok great, my gun apparently was made in early 1980's. The chart is a little confusing, but im sure i will figure it out somehow

or if someone wants to help me i can let them know via email what the serial # is and they can tell me, b/c i took the first 2 # on the serial number, and gave me a year, looked it up and it didnt make any sense..?? ???

Not claiming to be anywhere near an expert, but I'm beginning to think that your rifle was made in 1960, see the link in my post above, scroll to:

Model 336: June 1948 to present.
219Zipper, 30-30, 307 Win?, 32 Special, 35 Remington, 356 Win, 38-55, 375 Win, & 44 Mag. Early serial numbers located on the lower tang under the lever. Later ones on upper tang. These serial codes also work for the 22lr leverguns as well. I got to hit the sack, but if I'm wrong, someone around here will certainly put you on the right track. ;D Mr fixit

Serial numbers that start with a T are from the year 1960. Dwight D. Eisenhower was President and Richard M. Nixon was Vice President and lost the election for president to JFK that fall. Happy shootin'.

.......about those pictures. Quit half-steppin'; I wanna see'um! ;D

336 with a T prefix is 1960 & at that time they put the numbers under the lever. Much better IMO than etched on the side like now. It should have something after the 336 on the barrel, 336RC, 336SC, 336A etc, but nothings written in stone.
If you can describe its configuration a litte we can pin it down for you. Things like does it have barrel bands that wrap over the top of the barrel & a full length tube or an end cap on the wood & half tube, barrel length.
A 336RC (regular carbine) has the bands a full length tube & 20-" barrel, 336SC (sporting carbine) had an end cap, 20" barrel & short tube, 336A is the same as an SC except with a 24" barrel.
Pics say a bajillion words! ;) Welcome aboard!

ok guys, you see my confusion, i was told to take the first 2 #'s and subtract them from 2000....so 2000-17=1983

the "t" was throwing me off, but im glad

turns out i guess its a 1960 model 336a.....

i will try to get pics up once i take some

as far as the barrel, tube....

there are no rings that go around the barrel, at the end of the foregrip, the tube extends maybe 3-4 inches, then the barrel goes out another 6" inches beyond the tube.......

will try to be more specific later on with pics

gun is in prime condition....and has been shot less than 20 times its entire life....its a closet queen :)

Not so fast. Do you have these pics saved to a file in you computer? If so, you click on the "Additional Options" icon/link at the bottom left of the reply page. On the right side of the "attach" bar, you click on the browse box, and then your computer's files are brought up. You then click on the file, select your pic, and the pic's name/description with show up in the bar. Then you just hit the "post" tab.
