The model 3040 Formost JC Penny's marked 336's were a very good gun, equal in quality to the model 30 Marlin. The only differences between the 3040, 30 and the 336 is the wood. The 3040 has a birch stock, instead of a walnut stock. The metal and mechanics are identical quality to a 336.
I believe the 3040 was only made for JC penny's in 1971, so that should be the year of your gun. I think the first two digits of your serial number will also be "71".

You're welcome! That would make it a 1972 model.
