I enjoy cabbage rolls, but fixing them is a PITA. My 85 YO Aunt was here the last two weeks, with my Mother, and I mentioned that I really enjoyed her cabbage rolls. We decided to make them without making the "rolls".

Drain and rinse with water a jar of sourkrout. Spread in bottom of deep baking dish

Break up very lean hamburg over that.

Spread evenly 1/3 cup, or so, uncooked rice.

Season. I used lots of garlic/onion flakes.

Chop up half a cabbage and spread over the top.

Cover in tomato juice.

Into the oven @ 350. An hour and a half did nicely, but my dish was several inches deep.....a longer, shallower dish might not take so long...You'll have to play with it.

I sprinkled cheese over the top when it was done and mixed it in.

Pretty darn good!!!

Top with some sliced kielbasa! MMMM!!
My mom calls it her 'Un-stuffed cabbage'!

The area I live is dotted with old small coal mining towns that were settled by Eastern Europeans.
Oh my gosh, the ethnic dishes that are prevalent, especially now with all the church festivals!!!
My mom-in-law cooks all the traditional Polish & Slovak dishes!!!
Wow!!!
I'll have to request & post some recipes!!

That recipe does sound good, Tubby. I bet that
you're a great cook judging from some of the posts
that you have made about cooking and recipes that
you have shared.

I miss you, Tubby and please come back soon!

You have no idea how good that sounds to me! By all means, post some Old World dishes! Include spices.....I'm not familiar with European flavors. A two week stay in Northern Germany was a real gastric delight when I was in the Army.....It was supposed to be a deployment, but it was more like a vacation of beer and food. mmmmmmmm

My wife fries Cabbage and Sausages in an Iron skillet with Cayanne pepper and some other spices, she changes them all the time...or so it seems.
