The deed is done. Just gave my VISA number over the phone for a 2008 (s/n 920) NIB 338MX that was placed in the closed-out rack of Shipton's in Billings, Mt. I want to thank dpe.ahoy for his posting to let us know that he saw a couple of rifles placed in the close-out rack for $499.99 each.
After I read it, I went searching in the internet and found their email address and sent them a message asking for the first 3 characters of the s/n, to describe the two letters mark stamped on the barrel, a picture of the rifle, how much to ship, and what form of payment they accept. Frankly I was not expecting a response. The next thing I know is that the next day I got a response from the store manager with all the info I asked. In my last email b4 the purchase I asked him if he could do a small test for me by placing the rifle on the edge of the counter with the top of the receiver aligned and even, and to see if the barrel looked aligned or off by 1-3 degrees (I learned that from someone in this forum). He did the test, responded that it looked perfectly OK to him and another fellow in firearms section. The only possible negative with this transaction is that all gun sales are final and can't return the rifle to the seller if I reject it b4 I do the actual transfer (like I could with budsgunshop). I would have to return it to the manufacturer, but I said possible, because these folks were so helpful, and after looking at the picture and the results of the test they conducted, that I think I won't have any problems. Now I have to find and buy some ammo. Stay tuned as I'll take pictures when I pick it up next Saturday.

Outstanding Al! Can't wait to see pictures and hear about the overall condition of the rifle from you. Sounds like a great find! OBTW, now we're both needing to collect new dies, powders and bullets. This Marlinitist condition is a wonderful thing to catch. I'll betcha Hal can get you started on the right path for reloading this one.
I think everything will be fine. It sounds like you did all the right things to find out if you got a good one :). Please keep us posted, Lonnie.
Good deal, congrats and welcome to the family.
Congrats. Update us when you get it.
The 92 serial number should be OK! It's the dreded 91's as far as I know. Dennis
Sure glad someone jumped on one of em. Still telling myself I don't need another. ::) They sure don't make it easy for a guy sufferin' with Marlinitis. DP
after my 336ER deal bit the dust..I tried contacting the fellow at shiptons..TJ , I think it was...for a 338...but as always..a day late and a dollar short....luckily I snagged a nice slightly used one...I'm actually glad as I saved a boatload of moolah and I think these will be true classics one day too...all original Marlins will be I'm sure 8)

Did you get a used 338 or 336ER? Please, post some pictures :D
Got the 338MX Al...pics are posted on the other thread...its only had a few shots through it...as close to new as it gets...but with an early 92xx ser#...it will be hard choosing it or the 308MX when grabbing one to walk the woods with ???
Calvin AND, I don't why anyone In there right mind would sell a perfectly good 338 with only a couple shots threw it but congad's as I'm jealous but I hope it works out good for You! I'm still waiting to see what My replacement will be but I think I would rather have a 92 or earlier JM. Dennis
According to the shop I bought it from..the original buyer traded it in to get a super duper reach out dual purpose caliber because he was moving to the western mountain states and he didnt think the 338 was long reaching enough for his new needs...i was told he traded to a 257 Weatherby for deer, goats and Coyotes...to each his own...and my gain...I had the dealer/smith load cycle it..no jams ..feeds like glass...and we did the straight edge check...straight as an arrow with no droop tube (unlike the new owner, per my better half..OUCH!)
