The deed is done. Just gave my VISA number over the phone for a 2008 (s/n 920) NIB 338MX that was placed in the closed-out rack of Shipton's in Billings, Mt. I want to thank dpe.ahoy for his posting to let us know that he saw a couple of rifles placed in the close-out rack for $499.99 each.
After I read it, I went searching in the internet and found their email address and sent them a message asking for the first 3 characters of the s/n, to describe the two letters mark stamped on the barrel, a picture of the rifle, how much to ship, and what form of payment they accept. Frankly I was not expecting a response. The next thing I know is that the next day I got a response from the store manager with all the info I asked. In my last email b4 the purchase I asked him if he could do a small test for me by placing the rifle on the edge of the counter with the top of the receiver aligned and even, and to see if the barrel looked aligned or off by 1-3 degrees (I learned that from someone in this forum). He did the test, responded that it looked perfectly OK to him and another fellow in firearms section. The only possible negative with this transaction is that all gun sales are final and can't return the rifle to the seller if I reject it b4 I do the actual transfer (like I could with budsgunshop). I would have to return it to the manufacturer, but I said possible, because these folks were so helpful, and after looking at the picture and the results of the test they conducted, that I think I won't have any problems. Now I have to find and buy some ammo. Stay tuned as I'll take pictures when I pick it up next Saturday.
