Bought a few boxes of Speer 180 gr. FN. to load for my 336XLR-35R.. Am curious if I can match the 300 Savage velocity with the same bullet weight, say 2300 to 2400 fps.

Used the 180 Speer in a 358 Win for years, and a 356 in the beginning. A great whitetail bullet, almost all dropped at the shot. Actually brought the speed down over the years from about 2600 down to 2300, and still had great effect on deer. Look under the bullet test forum, the thread there called focus on the 190 hawk and 35 Rem has some tests on the penetration of this bullet fired out of 24 inch 336A . Would think if a careful reloader wanted to, 2300 could be probably be safely reached from 24 inch barrel. At the moment mucking around with a 24 inch 250gr 35 Rem load that is beyond what one would expect with no pressure signs.

Well, granting that only space vehicles can go 24,000 fps, yes, you can match that velocity of 2300 plus. 42 grains of H335 will get you there, as will 41.5 of 3031. I'd start around 37.5 grains with either and work up. Since I suppose your XLR has the longer barrel, this should be quite easily done. In fact, I can reach that velocity with a 20 inch.

Great news so I guess I'll have no problem, far out.

I load 41 grains H-335 in my model seven bolt 35 rem and it shoots good. I probably could go to 42 pretty easy but it shot so good I stopped at 41 grains with the 180 speer FP. Its a safe load in my rifle but you need to start a little lower and work up for safety sake.
