I’m thinking of having some “engraving” done on the buttstock of my 336 & 39A. Just a little figure. Kind of a (personal) brand of sorts. Could this cause any problems with the “Mar-Shield” finish and is there any kind of touch-up that can be done to the finish to reseal that area ?

I'd think you could touch up the engraved area with tru oil or something similar. Myself I'd likely strip it & refinish the whole thing.

You could easily seal the carved area with any good stock finish or sealer.

If you have a oil rubbed finish you should not have a problem . If a shelac/poly type finish you might run into splits or cracking when you bite into the surface. If that is the case I agree with leverdude, refinish the whole thing.
