Alliant Power Pro 300-MP, anyone?

I was digging through the Alliant website and saw the listing for their new Magnum pistol powder... has anyone used this stuff? Sadly, they don't have data for the .41Mag, yet, but I was looking at the loads for the .357 (which I load for) and the .44Mag (which I don't.)

1686fps :eek: vs 1265fps, 300MP vs 2400 and the 158grn Gold Dot in .357;

and 1570fps vs 1434fps, 300MP vs 2400 and the 240grn Gold Dot in .44.

Good heavens...! Almost 1700fps with a 158gr .357 load... out of a pistol.

Dennis, did they show a barrel length? Alliant often uses a 10" machine rest barrel for their pistol ammo testing, which I personally think is cheating. It ought to be six inches for 357 ammo in pistols, and 18 or 20 inches for rifles. It's another way of inflating their figures for advertising and promotional copy at the cost of common sense. Maybe I'm just getting addlepated, but I can't remember the last time I shot a 10-inch 357............ ::) :p 8)

Well, that was my first thought... but both .357 loads were fired in 10" barrels. They list an 8.3" .44Mag barrel, which makes me think S&W 8 3/8". Maybe this would be a good powder for the 'ole 1894...?

Well, I'll bet a shot of pennecillin will take care of that...
Wonder what the burn rate is like? Faster or slower than 2400? I tend to like the slower burning stuff in my 357 rifles.
Willy, I'm betting it's Alliant's answer to Hodgdon's Lil Gun, suggested uses are listed as Magnum handgun rounds and the 22 Hornet, just like Lil Gun. That would make it a few notches slower than 2400. 8)

That's why I'm wondering if it might be a good powder for the 1894... Darn, I wished they had .41Mag data...
I bet if you used Lil Gun data and started on the low end, you'd be fine. 8)

"Hmmm... there is still quite a bit of room left in the case. I'll bet they designed this new powder for 90% case capacity, and I really want to get an avatar photo like PJ has, so.... "

I'm not familiar with LilGun at all. I may just shoot Alliant an email and see if They comeback with anything.
I've found a few references to it being slower than H/IMR 4227. That'd be right up my alley for my 357s.
I emailed Alliant and axed them if they had data for the .41Mag and 300MP...

This new powder would be excellent in the 41 mag with jacketed bullets.
Unfortunately we have not tested it yet in this application. Thanks for
your note and have a nice day.

Obviously, not the wealth of information I hoped to receive.... ::) ...and how do you know that it would be excellent if you haven't tested it, yet?

I guess if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

Sounds like your orders are pretty clear. :)

We'll be looking forward to the range report.
Anyone tried it yet?

Haven't been able to find it yet... :p
Can't find it here either. For that matter can't find Lil Gun either. It's got to be a pretty common powder before the LGS here carries it.
