I think with everyone and I mean everyone hyping the 45/70 it did not have a chance. I think these days a rimmed cartridge is out of style. I personally feel the 45/70 is a reloaders cartridge allowing many pressure levels for the many guns out there that there is no need for the 450. I will not miss it.

Did you mean to say that belted cartridges are out of style because the 45-70 is a rimmed cartridge and, if I'm reading your comment correctly, you seem to like it?

I wish someone would make ammunition, or at least brass for it other than Hornady. Hornady seems to be making nothing for it right now. I realize it's not as popular as the 45-70, nor will it ever be, but there must be some demand/desire for it or Winchester and Browning wouldn't still be chambering for it. Somebody must be buying those rifles. You'd think they'd want some ammo to go along with it.

Once the ammo manufacturers start to see NATO calibers not selling as fast as they can make it they might start making more hunting calibers.
As long as they are running full throttle making bank everything else will be back burner.

It could be that the 450 was viewed as "just another" me too cartridge. It never really caught on. Having handled one for a once over, it had a smooth action, although I did not fire it. I was impressed.

I went with the 45-70 because of the availability of ammunition.

That's my reasoning for obtaining a .308 and a .223 too. Even though the .223 seems to be on its way out as a NATO cartridge, that caliber will be with us for a looong time if for no other reason than it was (and still is) so popular for so long. Same with the .308. In civilian circles, the .357, 38 spec, 45 auto, 9mm, 44 mag & 45 Colt will be with us for a long time too because of their long term popularity, I believe.

308 is one of the most flexible round ever made. There are Tons of selections available when ammo IS available.

I stocked up on all my ammo back when my Walmart's were selling firearms and ammo. Those days are gone, the local stores have told me that directly.
