Today sighted in my .45-70 Ruger No.1-S with 400gr Barnes Buster hunting load. Same load used in my GBL and G2 rifles. Mild load for Ruger No.1 at 1850 fps muzzle speed. About 60 fps faster from 22" barrel compared to 18.5" barrel GBL.

First used 400gr Speer/same powder charge to get on target. Note Buster deeper seating depth and greater bearing surface significant effect on muzzle speed (and pressure!). About 120 fps faster compared to 400gr Speer!

Good shooting and beautiful rifle. I have it’s uglier little brother in 45-70( the number 3). I hear the number 1’s don’t kick quite as bad as the 3’s but 400 grains at over 1800 sounds painful for my rifle.

Bet I could safely get 2300+ fps muzzle speed with 400gr Buster from my .45-70 Ruger No.1 to down heavy game double extra dead. But just plain dead at 1850 fps muzzle speed will do. ;)

I shoot 300gr in #1-#3 & 1895 Marlin. I have only shot Factory 405 gr JSPs in any of them. I do have 2boxes of Barnes 410g Rn. These are fairly old bullets from style of box and they are labeled 458” & 45/70, no cannalure. I might load them up for the #3, I don’t want to fool with 0 on other two. I only have one #1 but have 5 #3s. The 45/70 & 375wins benefit from the stock extension they sell that replaces butt plate, adds an inch. That short stock is why #3s thump you. 6411680B-EC29-4641-B26D-E1EFFB3ABD14.jpeg

I have fired a 355gr Wide Flat Nose case from my 22" barreled RUGER 45/70 at 2500fps and hunted with that bullet at 2300fps.

However, much better with a huge amount less devastation if the 465gr WFN cast at 1650fps.

I have tested that bullet up to 1900fps, but it so effective at the 1650fps level, of course with proper bullet placement on both deer and elk, there is no need for the higher velocity.

400gr Buster 1850 fps mv 140 yard zero calibrated using Nikon Spot On app for Nikon Omega 250 BDC 3-9x40mm 39 F 6000 ft elevation. Also ballistics table.

Close range hunting proposition at best. Effective range drops off rather quick.

Hey Slamfire - great report on the Speer/Barnes Buster/Marlin GBL/Ruger No. 1. I’ve killed quite a few deer with the 400-grain Speer (MV 1,800 fps) out of my 22”-barreled 1895 Classic.

Launched at 2300 fps heavier game effective range increases maybe about doubles.
