I'm toying with the idea of replacing a .30-30 with a .45-70. One of the things that I like the best about the .30-30 though is the light recoil and adequate power for sub-150 yard hunting. What kind of performance would you get from making a light-loaded .45-70 cartridge with .45 handgun bullets like these: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=950721

.45 pistols are .452.

you can get 300gr and 350gr cast bullets pretty cheap and load them mild to wild

Dardas makes 350 gr bullets for the .45-70 that shoot pretty well. For mild loads Trail Boss powder is king. 14 gr pushes the 350 gr pill at around 1000 fps or so with very mild recoil. The great thing about TB is it's bulk. You'll get consistant ignition and it's practically impossible to double charge a case.
If you need a little more oomph AA5744 is a good choice. It's a very bulky stick powder and loads of 25.3-28.2 gr will get you 1325-1475 FPS.
The TB load I have experience with and while I've loaded some rounds with the 5744, I've yet to try them out.
Some people like Unique for the .45-70 but I have no experience with that.
