Hi All,

I plan on loading some 45-70 loads with the Data from the Lyman#48 manual, it states the following load,
rem case
rem 9 1/2 primer
rem 405gr .458 jsp
51.5gr IMR-3031 as the max load with 1702 FPS velocity from a 24" barrel.
How fast would this load be from a 18.5" Guidegun?
would a velocity of 1600 FPS be adequate for moose/black bear/Elk?
Is there anyother place I can get load data for the Remington 405gr, using rem brass.imr-3031?

Best Regards,
Mickeyjr.

I have worked up to 53.5 grains of IMR 3031 and the Rem 405 in my 22 inch barelled gun this load is a kicker! 3031 is on the slow side for the 45-70 and lower pressure loads with it tend to leave a lot of powder residue. I have standardized my load at 1500 fps with this bullet and am satisfied it will do anything needed. You could do a search for 3031 and get a lot of data from this forum and the big bore forum also.

MickeyJr don't equate speed with killing power. There are plenty of loads that go fast but don't penetrate. There are loads in 45-70 that actually reduce penetration. I would not hesitate to shoot an elk with a 405 grainer at 1300 fps as long as I get the shot I am compfortable with. If you go to bigbore and type in penetration in the search command you will get a lot of information on how well the round can perform. Good luck and straight shooting.

I've found that generally you will see 20 fps difference per inch of barrel.

Mickey-It all depends on the powder you use. Here are some examples first shot in a 24 inch test barrel then in a Guide Gun all at max velocities and pressures.
Speer 400 grain---1987 fps in 24 inch...1811 fps Guide Gun..176 fps diff.
Speer 400 garin---1994 fps in a 24 inch.1856 fps Guide Gun..138 fps diff.

Swift 400 A-Frame..1987 fps in a 24 inch..1856 fps Guide Gun..131 fps diff.
Swift 400 A-Frame..2021 fps in a 24 inch..1928 fps Guide Gun..93 fps diff.

So it ranges from 15.5 fps to 29.3 fps for an inch of barrel. In Garrets loads and there velocities in a 22 inch barrel..They average close to 75 fps less in the Guide Gun or about 18 fps per inch.I always figure about 150 fps from 24 inches to the Guide Gun to be safe or 25 fps but 75 fps from 22- 18.5....

Thats just me....
