39AS bubba’d

1814 Views 33 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  Mikemild13
I just picked up a nice, 1994 39AS. It’s almost perfect in every way…except bubba turned the mouth of the outer magazine tube into a French Horn, However, for $370 I figured I could deal with it.

Anyone ever see this or know why? Feeds fine, just ugly. Short of replacing the outer tube, any other recommendations for making it right? Peening it back cylindrical ?

thanks

Nice. Good thinking about the drill bit.

I wonder if when you peen it back to round if the outer tube might fit inside the collar of the inner tube's endpiece. You might have to clean up the edge of the outer tube even when you get it back to round and to correct size, as it appears there are some flareing on the edge of the mouth of the outer tube. Any machinist coule use small hole or telescoping gages and give you an exact diameter of the inside of the outer tube so you can have a mandrel turned to allow you to
peen it back in shape. Sorry, didn't see the other posts and that it's fixed. Nice rifle BTW, Grandson of My 1892!

If I would have used a pin gauge of the correct size, I could have peened it to the original diameter, but I was in a hurry. Being a little too long for the pin to fit into the notch, I filed a little off the end of the outer tube. If I get it to fit within the end piece, the pin will sit too low. However, I could probably find an O ring to fit into the end cap that would make it work. Thoughts?

The repair looks good.

You do know that you ruined a perfectly executed "flared Tactical speed-loading magazine tube". ;)

You did an excellent job on that feed tube, looks great. Picture of the complete gun looks great also. I’ve got a 39AS a little older than yours but it’s one of my favorite Marlins. Welcome aboard from New Mexico.

To make this correct, I think you need both a new/used inner AND outer tube. The inner tube appears to be the incorrect one as someone stated below. JMO.

Another thing to check might be to see if the inner tube is the appropriate length and maintains proper pressure on the cartridges when fully loaded to ensure the LAST cartridge feeds properly. JMO.
