I just picked up a nice, 1994 39AS. It’s almost perfect in every way…except bubba turned the mouth of the outer magazine tube into a French Horn, However, for $370 I figured I could deal with it.

Anyone ever see this or know why? Feeds fine, just ugly. Short of replacing the outer tube, any other recommendations for making it right? Peening it back cylindrical ?

I'm thinking you need the correct inside tube, look at the difference , the outer tube was flared so the nub would engage the outer tube. You can try inserting something of appropriate size and reshape the outer tube, but the inner wouldn't lock up. Another option is to cut the outer tube down and reshape it.

It looks like a Marlin tube/follower. What model gun might it be from ?

I am thinking Ole Bubba messed up the tube and shortened it some.
Hardened gage pins are available in almost any size in .001" and less increments. Insert the correct diameter pin and tap the tube back to shape. Trim to a better fit with the inner tube.
I would work it cold.
For what you paid you could but a new tube and double your money.

Thank you. The gunsmiths at work have those pin gauges. I’ll give it a try

That inside tube looks to be correct to me. I would for sure try to peen the outer back to round so the cap slides over it before I would do anything else.

Fixed it!
Too lazy to get a pin gauge so I used a drill bit that fit well enough, a brass hammer and file. Looks pretty good. The inner tube doesn’t fit inside the cap, it now fits flush against the bottom. I’ll live with it until I stumble upon a new outer tube.

Lol.Good fix .My favorite Marlin was a steal from a local pawn shop-young man inherited the store and did not care for guns,tools or anything else.Its shut down now.
Got a 1983 JM stamped 336c ,with a Luepold 1 piece scope mount and equally old but good condition Nikkon 3-9 for $185 (+$15 gubment backround check fee)-Bubba had replaced barrel band screws with broken wood screws and it was missing the front sight hood....Good ol Bubba.Git er done!

It looks to me like whoever had it would load it and them slam the rod down into the tube.
Over time the tube just belled out.
I have seen a couple of 22's over the years that has happened too.

I found this old 1914 Winchester Model 1912 20 ga last March in Richmond. Didn’t know there was such a critter. Used a socket on an extension and a rubber mallet to expand a tight spot in the magazine where the follower was hanging up. Not very pretty but it was all there. I love the 20 ga downsizing from the 12 ga M12 frame. Marlin did the same thing with it’s Model 30 20 ga. Neat shotgun. Thinking it will become a riot gun as the polychoke kinda buggered it up. A Cutts would have been cool.
