i was hunting a 10 pt whitetail(which i didn't get, either archery or rifle season) so my story is short. i passed up smaller bucks and does on my "hopes" of getting him. since i already have two deer(dad got a 8 pt and doe) in the freezer, i let my doe tags go to the last day. naturally, it was raining Saturday(last day), so i either had choice to go to my stand and put up an umbrella or i could go to my shop, open up the back doors and watch it rain on the hopes of getting a deer. i choose my stand instead. two hours later and soaked(despite umbrella), i was about to give up and call it season, when she showed up. i was thinking she would fit in my freezer quite nicely, so my win m94/williams fp sights in 35/30(JES Reboring) lined her up and sent a 200gr fn gc(bullshop) over 20.0gr of 2400/dacron going 1726fps from the muzzle. 30+/- yards away, she got my message and ran about 15 - 20 yards till she gave up the ghost. my message was behind the shoulder, broke one rib, took out the lungs and then it exited with another rib. the exit wound was about 3/4"+/- and didn't blood shot any meat.

then i called my brother and he gutted it(thank you says the cripple) and drug it out to my polaris ranger. i was quite pleased with the deer hoist. it took my deer off the ground and my brother was pleased when i got it to the truck. just back her up, put the hind quarters in the truck bed and crank her down.

best $80 i spent.

i still have late archery season to get the 10 pt, but its sooooooooooo cold outside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I obtained my 35/30, no one, including me, had ever heard of it. Two years later, it's like they are everywhere!! Winchester missed out on that opportunity!! Mine is on a Marlin 336SC that I swapped the pistol grip out for a straight stock. Perfect saddlegun!! great on the deer!! Do you have a scabbard in your Ranger? I have a Yahama Rhino SXS and looking for scabbard ideas for my saddle gun...Thanks for the report and the pics. Need a hoist, too! LOL

Mine is a JES Rebore, also.

i hunt in swPA.

i use a kolpin gun mount.

i've been wanting a 35/30 for years but i always got another rifle or didn't have the money. this year i decided i "hafta to have it", so i saved up my pennies and i sent it to JES. i luv the m94 now. the 30-30 was alright, but.......i needed better. i have killed my first buck and my first doe with the 30-30. i can't count how many came after, but a 30-30 wasn't fer me.

in my area, everybody has either a 30-06 or 7mm mag. once in awhile a 270 will come in. theres a smattering of cartridges 300 win mag, 338 win mag, 338 rum and the like. heck, everyone said the 444 was dead but i bought it anyway. a 35/30 is something that they don't understand. thats good fer me, i like old cartridges.

Depending on what you have on hand, you likely won't need any, unless you just want to.

When I got mine, I was guided by the original owner. I had 357mag dies. I had 35Remington dies, I had 32spl dies and 30-30 dies, I had 356Win dies. My cases are all 30-30 cases. I run them through the 32spl sizing die and then the 35 Remington sizing die(it has a tapered expander plug), seat a new primer, decide on powder charge and bullet (or create a fire-forming step as I was guided to but chose not to. Bullet seating was done with my 356 bullet seater and crimped with my Lee FCD in 356Win. I think I have a set of 35/30 dies, but I don't use them. subsequent sizing duties are handled by my 357mag carbide sizer and just the neck is sized, being careful not to touch the shoulder joint. The body does not need sizing and has not over at least a dozen reloadings. Safe to say it may never happen, unless I get wild and crazy with the pressures.

Ah, yes, the dies are expensive $90 on the low side and I've near $200 on the high side. You really don't need a custom set, unless you don't have any. The dies I use can all be picked up at gun shows for cheap as individual dies. If I could anticipate ever needing a full length sized, I'd probably just add a 375 Win sizer or take an old 30-30 die and chop it at the shoulder and use the body section to size the body and still use the 357 mag carbide sizer on the necks. Shoulders don't ever get "pushed back" on any of my cartridges. As far as I'm concerned, that is simply asking the cartridge to stretch and then you get to trim it. I hate trimming cases. IF you had a pal with a lathe, you could open up a 30-30 sizer to 35 cal specs and be done with it. Lots of choices cheaper than a custom set.

I have a possible candidate for re-boring. Been looking at those options. 35-30 uses cheap easy to find brass, but the 356 has cheaper dies. Decisions decisions.

i like the 35/30. its becoming my new favorite cartridge. i like the 444 too, but i have her. $120+/- isn't cheap (i'm on a disability paycheck), but it ain't expensive either. if you already have a .358" , then by all means, i use sweetwater's post. but i don't, so ch4d to the rescue. i also have many many 30-30 cases. federal, remmies, winnies galore. i don't need 30-30 cases but.....since i got the rifle, i decided that 30-30 starline cases were fer me. so i bought them. i gave the old 30-30 cases to my dad, he has a savage m340 in 30-30.

i probably shot 400 - 450 times on a 100 starline cases. the other 150 starline cases are in my bench. thats where they will stay, until i'm dead and gone. or if i get a hankerin' for 6.5/30-30.
