30-30 336ss Load Gate Misaligning?

1948 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  swany
The load gate screw on my 91xxxxxx series 336ss chambered in 30-30 keeps loosening after firing only a few shots...plinkers or full power, doesn't matter. The load gate then will want to twist up or down often preventing the next round in the tube from sitting properly/squarely/centered. Sometimes, this means that the carrier doesn't pick up the next round when the action is cycled.

The load gate spring tension is perfectly fine...is there a known reason why that screw keeps backing out or why the gate wants to misalign?

Jech I'm sure no expert on this but it sounds to me like you need to hit that screw with a dab of lok tite and snug her down again, then let her dry. Should solve your problem.

Indeed.
Its a pretty rare one to act like you describe really. They do loosen up on ocasion & when they do it can cause problems, but usually tightening them up solves it. The normal troubling screws are the lever & lifter screws because theres parts rotating on them. At any rate a little loktite should do it for you.
Take the loading gate out and lay it flat on a table or other flat surface and make sure it's not twisted from one end to the other.

Have seen a couple that were twisted and they acted like you describe. Twisted them straight and tightened them down and no issues since.
