A friend of mine says he has a 256 winchester on a Marlin lever. I asked him if it is a gibbs wildcat and he said no. Has anybody got any info? I believe he said a 60 gr bullet.

Model 62 levermatic came in 256, it has a short throw lever action about 25% of normal, 5,960 were made in 256 as Marlins and 1,758 were sold as Western Auto, between 1963-1969, the first 4000 were shipped without serial numbers and were recalled to be numbered. Marlin, at the time of Brophys book would still put on a serial number if you sent it back, and I suspect since they are illegal by Federal law without one, still would. The 62 was also made in 30 Carbine.
