Gents...I have owned an old 94 for some time now... was wondering what the M stood for at the end of the 25-20 stamp on tang... Gonna go out on a limb and guess 25-20 Marlin??

Yes, .25-20 Marlin. In previous posts, folks that have a Marlin with the same designation say that standard .25-20 cartridges work just fine.

One of these days, I may quit being lazy, and do a chamber cast, just for my own edification. From what I have read, the marlin case was a tad longer than the Win version. So in theory at least, the Marlin might not chamber in the Win? But the Win ammo would chamber in the Marlin.

Since Marlin ammo is pretty scarce these days, chamber casting might be the easiest way too prove it.
