When I was making noise a while back about not being able to find my favorite 300gr JHP from Remington, a good friend (Doug) sent me some of these to try out. Where else other than MO is somebody that you never met going to ship you a box full of boolits they bought and pay the postage? Incredible place we have here...

I loaded these up last night on top of my favorite H4198 and headed to the range this morning. Oh my goodness, now I know what I've been missing. Big metplate, can hear it smack the target and a cloud of dust goes up looking like a small plane just crashed behind the target. This is good stuff!

And then the target. Four stringers sighting in and bang, five in the center. Now this was only at 50 yards off a bipod at 4.5 power. But it was fun to watch em all going home to center.

Now to load some more. I used H4198 at 29 grains. No chrony but guessing around 1350-1400.

I'm hooked on lead already.

turn your rounds upside down. You always store rounds lead down.
That way mositure wont wick your primers
That's a new one for me Pard but I'll heed your warning - or is that if you cast your own and they are water dropped.

thanks...

Moofy, I already had big clangers....... that's why I like the big rounds.

The pics are 45/70 but there will soon be lead coming to a 444 & 450 near me soon... Don't know why it took me so long to try em out, heck if it wasn't for bjm I might still be loading jacketed.

This lead thing really has me thinking about trying hard to find a lead source. Would love to start making my own.

loaded some 405 with IMR3031 and your right about the dirt cloud.
There was a guy on the range shooting an AR and his little pointy projectiles (LPP's) kicked up a small poof of dirt each time he fired, the 405gr pills looked like explosions going off behind my target. Wish I had a video of that today..

Any day Ray, any day. If you ever get to Florida you gotta look me up. I have way too much fun at the range and in the field for it to be legal. My BIL has recently joined in with my madness and is having a blast too.

Thanks Bugs! I may have to try that powder as well.

I picked up some Unique powder too but it looks like the load would be around 13 grains and I have no idea how to stabalize that small of a charge in such a big case. Folks must use some kind of filler for small loads like that. What charge do you use with RL7 on the 350 pill?

Hey 1895,

28gr of 4198, with a 405cast chronos at 1200fps. Out of a CB.

You may want to try Universal Clays, as well as Unique. Either powder, the "sweet" spot will be between 13 or 14gr. 14gr of either powder will yield 1100-1150fps with a 405. Out of my CB, the 350's shoot better at 50yds. However, the 405's are shooting 4-1/2" to 5-1/2"@200yds. The 350's are going to 10"@200yds.

No filler needed with Unique/Universal Clays. Have fooled with fillers in the 4198, waste of time. The Universal Clays has single digit extreme spreads.

Will work some 405's up with H 322, in the near future.

Bunch of load data in this thread, was working up the CB. http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/45-70-govt/78432-1895-cb-skinner-sight.html

Hope this helps.

Later, Mark
Good info there Mark, thanks for the link also... Gunna have to pick up a chrony one of these days now that I'm playing with lead. Sometimes you just gotta know...
