New Marlin owner!
I'm a proud new owner of a 1983 (or so I think from the serial number) 39A that has never been fired. I picked it up from the original owner, along with a 1999 never been fired 1894cs. I'm a little confused about the markings on the barrel. In gold letters it says "MARLIN GOLDEN 39A". I've seen some that say "ORIGINAL GOLDEN 39A". Are they an indication of the year as well?

There were some changes in the barrel markings over the years (not much, but some). Marlin has been known to use left over parts from one year to the next so stamping on the barrel is not the best way to figure the age of your rifle. If you are somewhere in the 1983 range take the first two digits of your serial number and subtract them from 2000, that will give you the year of manufacture. Was 1983 the first year for the crossbolt safety in the 39A, I'm pretty sure it was in the 1894 and 336. Anyone know for sure? I used to own one with 17XXXX serial number, with a safety, but it was stamped 39AS, and was also stamped "Original Golden" on the barrel. I also once owned a 30AS from 1983, also with the crossbolt safety. Sure wish I had that one back.

The cross bolt and rebound hammer was added in 1988 on the 39A. '83 on the center fires.

My 39A serial number is 17XXXX and there is no cross bolt safety.
