Just found a .44 mag 1894s with 20.5" brl in a nearby auction. Could be a bargain! Estimated around $300.00 (US Equivalent), Serial starts 04, so I think its 1996 vintage. Looks in really excellent order, lovely wood, very tempted.... Though doubt it will go so cheap...

Does anyone know any reasons I shouldn't try and buy?

04= 1996. The rifles from that time frame are very well made. Better buy it,they're going for $750-$800 USD in this neck of the woods. Some 1894S were microgroove(it will be rollstamped on barrel) and some were 6 groove. Late 90's was a transition period. Some had checkered stocks, some smooth.
Give us the report.

There are going to be people in the crowd that know that's a bargain. You're going have to decide on a limit I'm sure. You might get lucky though. Go for it.

I agree, go for it. Here's my current track on the model (JM marked only):

Marlin 1894 Rifle in .44 Mag, 20" barrel. Blue Book of Gun Values (38th Edition) indicates between $500 in 95% condition and $625 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 100 recorded prices for this model gun from $431 to $1495 over a period of 2 Yrs 4 Mos ending May 27, 2018. The average price as of that date was $709. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $0 not listed. The last 10 prices I have for this model since 4/29/2018 range from $516 to $825 averaging $686.
