1894P (16.25") 44mag PA deer hunting loads

1. What's the best factory deer hunting ammo for 1894P 44mag (and why)?

2. What's the best handload deer hunting ammo for 1894P 44mag (and why)?

3. How hot can one safely handload an 1894P?

thanks in advance 8)

1894P (16.25") 44mag PA deer hunting loads

I used to have a Win 94 Trapper in 44 Mag. I generally bought the factory ammo with the heaviest bullets I could find. Since most, if not all, 44 Mag ammo is intended for pistol use you'll probably not get the most out of your 44 Mag rifle unless you handload.

1 - For factory ammo, Buffalo Bore sells a 300gr Speer Flat Nose round that ought to be plenty deadly and Hornady sells a 300gr JHP for about half the price of the Buffalo Bore.

2 - "Best" is pretty subjective. One guy might be using 240gr JHP in an effort to cover ranges out to 150yds or so where another guy who hunts in heavy cover might use a 320gr hardcast to minimize deflections and maximize penetration. 240gr JHP should kill deer dead and generally have a flatter trajectory than 300gr loads. Handloads for 44 Mag can be loaded hotter than most would care to shoot in a pistol, indeed hotter than should be used in some pistols.

3 - No hotter than any published load from any reputable source.
