Gents,

I've come across an 1894CB in .44 magnum, with 20" octagonal barrel (NIB) for about $765.00 before tax.

Serial # starts with 91, so by the 'list' it was made in 2009, correct??? (I'm hoping it's an actual "Marlin", too! Didn't get to see the proof mark.)

In today's market does this price seem low, or good or great???

I really messed up late last year when I passed by an 1894CB Limited (.44 mag) for less than $500. The vendor that had it, sold it. :'(

Lastly. . . what is it about the octagonal barrel(s) that draw me to them!?!?!?!?! How many others have this 'attraction'??? ???

For a new one that is a pretty good price.

If you check Lipsey's web site the suggested retail is $981 - so $765 is a 22% discount. I would be surprised if a dealer could go much below that and make money. I have looked around recently and did not find anything new that was below that. Many were priced right at $800. I did find a 2006 model that was in near new condition with the box which I bought. I would definitly want to see any new gun in the flesh given the recent quality issues but it sounds like you would be buying face to face.

Good Luck! Rob

$765 sounds pretty much right. Your serial number is 09 manufactured. I have an 09 in .357 that's a JM proof barrel, but yesterday someone posted they had an 09 with a Remington proof (the reciever being left over from closed down factory, barrel, new by Remington). Check the proof, nobody seems to be liking the Rem Barrels too much.
There are dealers on the internet who sell these and their prices do vary. I paid about $745 for my CB 20" eight or nine months ago. Plus $75.00 for Calif. FFL. Mine shoots fine so far, no issues I couldn't deal with easily.

I recently picked up a new 1894 Cowboy .44mag for $749. There were a couple listed for more, and one for less on GB but the cheaper one had really plain wood. The wood on the one I picked up was exceptional...although the fit to the receiver could have been a lot better. The front sight is also very loose in the barrel dovetail...it basically will move if anything touches it.

I didn't expect it to be "perfect" because of the issues reported with the newer Marlins, but I am overall happy with my purchase. It seems to cycle rounds fine so far and the action is very smooth but I haven't had it at the range yet! It has a "JM" proofmark.

I agree with George...all Marlins should have octagon barrels and I didn't really need this one when I bought it...

Wait a minute, of course I did....

Uncle Ed is buying any MARLIN that catches his eye at a good price. Likewise on selected three screw RUGERS or Original Size VAQUEROS/BISLEY VAQUEROS in 357 and 44. I don't own any "safe queens" so a gently used gun is more desirable than a NIB...and usually a lot cheaper.

I've had most of my rifles awhile, but haven't paid over $500 for any but the 30/30 Cowboy two years ago.

If you can spare the money, give the gun some thought.

I have a .44 Cowboy that I love to shoot. And I have 3 .357 Cowboys that I have on hand for Cowboy Action Shooting. I have considered selling one of the three .357s but maybe I will wait knowing that the price may just skyrocket.

I do know where I can get my hands on a like new .44 Cowboy with a 24 inch barrel for less than $600 maybe I should buy that and see what I can get for it. ???

Funny thing, that is exactly what I'm looking for, contact me if you're really going to get it.

Well, the 1894CB is mine!!!!!!

Serial number: 91065xxx. (Born on Date - 2009.)
Proof Mark: JM (On left side of barrel, right at the receiver, although, it's not complete and difficult to read. At least it's not a REP inside of an oval on the right side!!)
Price: $739.99 + tax

I picked it up from Green Top Sporting Goods, in Glen Allen, VA. They have one left, if anyone is interested.
It too has a 91 prefix serial number.

I'll try to get some pics and post 'em after I get it cleaned and lubed.
I can't wait to take 'er to the range and she what she'll do.

All that 91 serial will tell you is that it was made in either 2009 or 2010. They kept using them last year until Remington used up the Marlin made recievers and started making their own with their own serial numbering system.
