I have in my possesion an 1888 in 32-20 that is pretty rough and is missing loading gate and hammer has notches broken from it. it also has the long sights on it like a Ballard or 1881. Is that correct? Thanks, moodyholler

I think they are the same hammer, but it's been too long since I worked on the 1888, to remember. My old parts catalogs don't show these parts in enough detail, and neither does Brophy's book. They look very similar, but you'll probably have to take the hammer from one of your 1889's and try it in there to know for sure. You should be able to lay one on top of the other to compare them.
The sights on the 1888 anmd 1881 Marlins were identical.
