    Small portable generators?

    Hey guys.

Whatís do you guys like in the way of small portable generators? I really like the idea of the small Honda and Yamaha generators - 2000 or 2200w - but yikes!!! A grand!!!

I want something small and quiet 2000-2500w (surge) for use night fishing, camping, and emergency backup duty for the fridge/freezer at the house.

I see there are a whole bunch of them out there... Yamaha, Honda, Generac, Westinghouse, Champion, Wen, various Misc. Chinese... Itís not really clear to me which ones really do work as advertised vs which ones have good specs but donít deliver..

I really like the idea that they are fairly quiet, pretty light, and donít drink gas like the bigger units do...

I've got one of the Ryobi 2200/2000 I've had 4 or 5 years never had a problem starts right up, was camping in Cades Cove and the guy across from me had a Honda, mine was as quiet as his and mine would even run the A/C in my camper where his wouldn't.....

I was wondering about that Ryobi as well. Looks like a nice little unit.

Inverter generators are the cat's pajamas, but the features come at a price. Honda is a fantastic reliable brand and if your life depended on a generator, it should be your first choice. But not everyone needs that, or can afford it.. One of the worst kept secrets is Harbor Freight's Predator line of generators. They rate surprisingly high among the bargain minded buyers.

the one i have is a champion 3800, and i paid less than 400.00
for it on sale at tractor supply.
i have a back-feed system that runs my house and two out buildings.
not sure but i think i could run one ac unit or a
    space heater without stressing it.
ive had it close to two years and it starts no problem.
    i keep stabil in it.

I have a Honda 2KW that I got about 11 years ago and it's worth the $1K. I use it pretty regular and about 12 days year camping by boat. Like some of the guys said, depends what you plan to use it for and how much is it worth to you. Like another Marlin.

A considerable thing to consider is if it is "pure sine wave" or "modified sine wave". Pure sine wave is better for a range of uses (particularly motors and computers), but is more expensive. Inverter generators are usually "pure sine wave".

We're set for a whole-house generator, but I am considering another for my Toybox/ManCave. Will stick to a "pure sine wave" model at about 7Kw. Haven't decided yet...

I am a power equipment dealer. The imported generators do work, however, where you will run into trouble is with service down the road. A lot of us dealers do not have access to parts for the Chinese products that are sold. Buy a name brand and get the best you can afford.

We have a generac 2200 that we use for camping trips. It gets used about 10-12 days a year and after 4 years no issues. We also have a Chinese Diesel 10/12k generator to run the whole house. We've had it for 8 years and was a year old when we got it. No issues with it until last summer while we were on vacation and our neighbor started it for the house sitter without first turning off the hot tub and air conditioner. The start-up load is too high otherwise and he ignored the instructions and ended up burning out the circuit breaker. I took out the breaker and easily found the same one for sale on line. I'd suspect that most of the parts that are going to go bad are available on line as most of the Chinese generators come out of the same factory and are just rebranded.
