    6x45 (6mm-223)

I've been after this cartridge in a rifle for 20 years. Initially, it was going to be in a Rem 700 short action but timing never worked out for my gunsmith or me. Anyway, after plunging into an AR-15 platform six months ago, the dream came true.

So far, I've only shot 60 rounds. Two different bullets and two different powders. Chronograhed velocity for 75 gr bullets is a touch over 2900 fps and 85 gr bullets a little over 2800 fps. Accuracy is normally 5 shots inside one inch. This upper currently has a Leupold VX3i 1.75-5x with German reticle. This scope choice was an attempt to offset the ballance of the front heavy barrel. Since this will mostly be used for target or stand hunting, the above scope is getting swapped out with a Leupold VXR 3-9x.

I ordered this upper with a 20" medium contour Shilen barrel. Wish I would have gone with a shorter and lighter contour perhaps with fluting to keep the weight down, and for better ballance.

LMT lower with Triggertech 3.5 pound trigger
Dtech upper with 20" Shilen 1:10 twist
Leupold VX3i 1.75-5x with German reticle

Congrats on finally getting your rifle built. I'm curious as to much it weighs in it's current setup?

Congrats! I've had at least one 6x45 for around 30 years now. Sold my 20" about 12 years ago with a set of Hornady dies and still have a 24" and set of C&H dies. Debating cutting down the 24" to 20".

    Maki00,

That is an excellent question. I just don't have a scale around the house to see. Overall weight isn't a problem, it's just too far forward.

    Moleman,

This is a fun little cartridge! What action did you use for your 6x45's?

AR15's, first one came as a mistake. I'd ordered a 6mm PPC and got a 6x45. Didn't feel like waiting another 3 months for a barrel so I kept it. Never did get a 6mm PPC.

Great looking gun. I was recently thinking of doing a 6x45 but went with the 300 HAM'R with a 20" barrel. I am one of those shooters that like a barrel heavy rifle. Good hunting.

The 300 HAM'R has me intrigued as well. Not sure what cartridge name is going to be on my next upper.

I had thought about building a 6x45. I ended up building a 25-45 Sharps as I have a few .25 cal bullets and molds laying around here at the homestead to feed the .25-20's and .250-3000. I went with a 16" standard weight barrel. I have handled some 20" heavy .556 and did not like the way they balance when handling.

I doubt that there is any real world difference between the 6x45 and the 25-45 Sharps. Other than to say I have something all of my friends don't.
