    Back to the Midwest

I recently retired back home to northwest Iowa after 38 years of working around the country and overseas. I have been hunting deer using muzzle loaders, bow and high power. In the part of the state I live in does not allow the use of high power, but straight wall calibers are allowed. Looking forward for any help/info in this regard. My first centerfire was a 336/30-30 and several deer met their fate at the business end of that rifle. Looking at a 444. Very happy to be a member!

A bill has been introduced in Iowa to allow bottle neck cartridges. Help support that legislative effort and you may still be able to use your 30-30.

I don't get the whole 444 concept. However it is something I have always wondered about. Why would anyone go with a 444 over a 45-70? The 45-70 can do pretty much anything within 200 yards. You can load it up or down in power depending on your recoil tolerance and you can even buy factory rounds that are loaded up or down in power. There are also a large selection of bullets for the .458 caliber 45-70. Lastly a 45-70 doesn't cause a lot of wide spread damage to the meat. I'm certain a 444 fan can clarify what I am missing here for both of us.

Hey Irn - welcome to MO and greetings from Ohio (another straight-wall rifle cartridge state). Sounds like you've earned your retirement - glad you're back home. A Triple 4 or .45/70 would do ya good (I'm a .45/70 guy myself but won't say anything bad about the .444).
