    New xt-22rz

After doing my best to make sure all the loved ones smiled at Christmas, Pop-Pop was really wanting a threaded 22 and there were no long boxes to be found under any of the trees. Having more 22's than I probably should and the situation is they range from my fathers first, a 67 Win and all the others in their pre/post war period glory. Not wanting to defile them in anyway, decided on the Marlin due to the reviews and the Marlin pile that already lives here. So after the first I ordered one and it arrived this week and is now in my possession. Well, new rifle happy and kind of disappointed rolled into one. Pulled from box in store for the usual S/N confirmation, the handling and visual joy was climbing even with bolt still in small box at the end of carton. When home it went straight to bench for tear down and hard inspection. Belly up, bottom screws removed and lifted stock off for bottom visual. Picked up barrel/rec and rolled looking over and I hear a thud, looking around and finding the barrel stud on floor and picked it up and finding the dovetail really over cut in barrel way too much. By design or sloppy, who knows, I believe you could probably throw it at the barrel and it would go in sometimes. Trigger, very happy as easily adjusted down to a crisp 2.7 lbs.. Then went to unscrewing the muzzle protection, I see it looks kind of maybe a little short. Cut length is .402" with a .496" diameter, Why .402"? If I am not mistaken, every 22 can I look at, every drawing I see is right around .500"x .500". The mental debate now is between which way I should have leaned, the RZ or the VR with threading it myself but the heavier barrel issue is there. Intended purpose was walking critter piece and with the intention of the smaller ones carrying. Nothing here I cannot fix up or work around and when the wind down here ever gets below >20+ gusts I will see what the groups are like. Not sorry with purchase as of yet but just my .02 of what I found for others to think about before possibly purchasing one. Range report to follow.
(I know I did not capitalize the xt or rz, still a little hurt)

Range report- No joy found on first trip! Federal Black 100 rounds 2"@25, CCI QUIET 25 rounds and would not even call it a group, can left in the box. Scope was removed from an old Stevens 15 single that would do 10 shot groups 3/8"-1/2"@25 all day with the CCI, just did not want to thread and also excuse for a new Marlin. One thing I found when apart, rear action screw with bolt removed tightened to where you think it should be protrudes into bolt way and will not allow bolt install. Backed out almost a turn to internal flush is how it went to range, not really loose and for sure not tight. Shorten screw, check bedding, inspect and possible cut crown, dig out some more different ammo and back we go. The Ol' 882 SS was really behaving nicely today, 50 rounds fat 1"@50 with 40Gr HP Win.

Couple days off this week and attack plan has started this afternoon. Used #10 AN3 .032" aviation washer under rear screw, able to now SECURE rear screw with one internal thread showing in bolt way snugged up good (25 in. lbs.). The bore scope adventure was mixed, internal bore appears average for a mass commercial pop. The muzzle is clearly #1 suspect now in the poor grouping in my view. It appears post drill and rifle some form of tooling was inserted (read slammed) into crown hard enough to not only "T" head and roll every land, but also hard enough to contact groove area 360. Pressing barrel in, some set up during manufacturer, who knows. It is now stripped, taped up and has an appointment with Mr. Lathe in the A.M.. Cut and correct muzzle OD thread length issue, re-crown, and back together she goes. Same ammo going in for comparison and we will see.

Range session went well, 3/4" 10 shot groups @25 with Fed SV and a cheap scope dealing with a bit of parallax. Screwed can on and almost duplicating groups after only elevation change with CCI Quiet, grouping same just random flyers every 5-6. Still on the fence over optics choice at this point and some expensive ammo to order. Aggravating to purchase a new rifle with issues but I think I will be very happy when package is completed. I understand it is not an Anschutz, CZ, etc., but just sloppy work and non-existent QC on their part even at this price point. As fast as you can, welcome to the new world.
