    Single Shot Experts, advice needed

A friend just bought a tip up, single shot rifle marked as below:

    W WURFFLEIN
    PHILAD'A PA U S A
    PATENTED JUNE 24th 1884

This rifle looks to be a 22 cal, heavy octagon barrel and with a tang rear sight. The barrel has a worn blued appearance, a nickeled receiver and crescent butt plate, the bore looked dirty but the rifling looks good. It has a four digit serial no.

    Anybody know what he has?

The barrel markings don't fit the picture, but from your discription, I would say, it discribes a Stevens "Tip-up" with a replacement barrel??

William Wurfflein was a gunsmith of Philadelphia manufacturing various rifles, mostly of targer grade, between 1874 and 1910. They were of outstanding quality and design and were ALL OF FALLING BLOCK DESIGN.
No mention of a tip action by Wurfflein.
I wonder if somebody fitted the barrel as a replacement for a tip up rifle. Either that or you have one hell of a rare rifle.
