There are several different terrains or conditions that will decide what kind of rifle you need for your situation. In my area if you are hunting big open woods, the home of fox squirrels, a semi target style with a scope can be used effectively by still hunters. Early in season when leaves are heavy you have to wait out your shots. Late in season you can see a squirrel a long ways off. If you are hunting Greys in the second growth you need a quick pointing rifle with irons or low power scope with good field of view. A target style rifle with a big scope is useless. The perfect all around squirrel gun is an old Savage 24. 22/410 O&U with a low power scope.

But I never seem to find 1 in good shape. I have a M6 Scout in that combo, but it is trying to keep the 410 shells, have to carry pliers or a short rod to get them, still don't get why they jump the extractor. But, the 22 is great after I fixed the burr where a teenager started dry firing on the walk in. But, it is great once you get in the woods, just short.

Savage model 42 22 LR / 410. Red dot sight. Very short and light, easy to carry either in the hand or on a light sling. Carry some standard 22 LR and some CCI quiet ammo. A 1/2 box of #7 or 8 shot 410 shells for the ones that will not stand still.

I had two Springfield M6s, 22 Hornet /410 with the Scout scopes. I never shot but a few 410s because the Hornets shot so lousy I lost interest fast. The Sav 24s with solid barrels and side select are the best ones. The solid barrel transition hammer select is second best.
You can't give away the models with open barrels. That new thing Savage bought out to replace the 24 is a total piece of junk. A good old model 24 in 22 or 22mg/ 410 or 20g will easy bring $500-$600 to open depending on the model.

How rare and what is the approximate value of a Stevens 22/410 (Plastic stock and fore end) of around 1945 vintage? memtb
