In my gun collection, I recently added a very nice Marlin 1894 JM Deluxe in 44 Mag. It shoots like a dream. Never did I ever think a lever action could be so accurate.
That being said, I'm looking to add a 39A to my collection. I know the barrels are shorter and the stocks are straight on the Mounties, but is there any other pro's or con's regarding the two? Decisions, decisions..... what the hell.... maybe I should just find one of both? Thanks
I have two Marlin 39a. One is a 1946 pistol grip with a 24" barrel. One is a 1964 pistol grip 20" barrel. I had two Mounties with 20" barrels, but sold them. There is no con's in a Marlin 39a!
I have a 39a 24" pistol grip1960's (don't remember the exact date) and a late 70's 20" Mountie and say get one of each but whichever one you or two or three you go with you won't go wrong.
It's personal preference, but I am a sucker for straight grips (all of my collection of Marlins have straight stocks), so I would vote for the Mountie.
They are also a little rarer and, therefore, IMHO more desirable.
I have a small collection of older lever action rifles. They all are straight stocked except a Savage 99. My newer post war levers are all straight stocked too. Levers feel weird to me with pistol grips. I got rid of Marlin 375w because it just didn't feel right. I will say that if you are running a scope the pistol grip provides a more natural hold. That's another thing that doesn't feel right, scope on a lever. I tried it one season and am back to reciever sights or irons.
I agree with these post above me. I have a straight stock 1964 39 Carbine and a pistol grip 1945 39A and they both handle and shoot fantastic. Never had a problem of any kind with either one of mine.

When I was a teenager in the early '60's, I had to make the decision on 39A or Mountie. I got the 39A and proceeded to wear out the barrel. Shortly after I retired I found a little used '69 vintage Mountie. I grabbed it. I shot it against my old 39A and the Mountie was much better. That finally convinced me to have the 39A rebarreled. I was lucky enough to send it to the factory before they closed and moved everything to NY. Now both shoot equally well, which is quite well.
I have 3 with the 24” barrel and an always on the lookout for a Mountie or a good deal on any 39. As was stated earlier, no downside to either. My latest acquisition.
It is a 1979 and I got a deal on it for $375 OTD. I bought two 39AS’s last year and paid over $500 for each of them. There are deals to be found but they are few and far between.
With the longer and heavier 39A my preference is a pistol grip, with the lighter and shorter straight stock Mountie is great, you can hold the forearm like John Wayne!
Well, I just bought a Mountie on GunBroker. Late 1957, early 1958. It really looked nice, the guy had some good pictures. I probably paid more than I should, but it's pretty clean. Whoever had it previously, didn't hurt it a bit.
