1965 Marlin Golden 39A lever kind of sloppy & not solid up against tang?

Hello I need some more help. I just purchased a 1965 Marlin Golden 39A and the hand lever feels a little bit sloppy & does not feel good & snug & solid against the tang. Everything else about the gun seems to be in fairly good condition. For some reason whoever had it someone along the line decided it turn the front sight around in the dovetail so the gold bead is pointing forward & the front hood is missing. Other that that everything seems to be pretty good. Could you give me some ideas to why the hand lever would be a little sloppy. Thanks for your help & have a great night!

Sorry I can't help, but I'll be watching this thread with interest to learn what it might be too. Hopefully someone will chime in here soon. CH

Does the lever hang loose and low when just at rest and you have to hold it up to the tang? Maybe you lever spring is just weak?

As mentioned, there is a spring inside the receiver that puts tention on the lever. Either the screw is loose or the spring is week. The screw is on the bottom of the receiver just in front of the lever. There is also a screw that attaches the lever to the receiver. If its loose, you'll get more side to side play. Either way, it should be an easy fix. Post some pictures of your new rifle.

The hand lever is a little loose say about a 1/4" off the tang when you hold the rifle upright. Then you can pull the lever like you are going to cock it & it probably will go approx. another 1/4" before it seems to get solid & ready to cock. Here are some pictures. Thanks for your help!

Definitely sounds like a loose or worn lever spring. Very nice looking rifle. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

That is a nice looking rifle. Gun Parts Corp has the new spring if that is your problem. I just ordered one a week ago. If you call and get their shipping code and then order online you can get it for about 12.00 shipped. Goodluck and hope you get it going. They also list them on Ebay but they are more expensive that way for some reason..

Some side-to-side play is normal. Don't worry about that part.

Guys the screw in front of the lever was loose. It might of loosened up during shipping. Tightened it up & it made a big difference. I would say it is about right now. If not it is very close. Guys thanks for all your help & have a great day!

I had the same thing happen on mine.... It works it's way loose from use, even with loctite blue.

BTW, don't forget the 'smithing stickies for some of these questions. There's one on this issue at:
