Model 39 with Model 1897 magazine tube latch issues

Model 39 with model 1897 magazine tube latch issues

I have a Marlin Model 39 with an early Model 1897 magazine latch. It does not seem to latch all the way, it starts to activate the latch but the tube is about 3/16s of an inch away from seating completely. My question is this, is it possible that someone has taken this apart and reassembled it mirror image reversed? The reason I ask is the latch is on the right side of the tube, looking at the muzzle of the rifle, most of the pictures of this type of magazine tube show the latch on the left side, facing the muzzle. It appears that the inside of the end cap is hitting the tip of the hook located on the magazine connection post holding the magazine to the barrel dovetail. I am thinking both the end cap/latch and the hook need to be reversed?

I suspect that those Model 39 parts do not interchange with 1897 parts.

I was led to believe that early 39s used left over 1897 parts, I think this is one of those guns!

Does the cap/latch look like this one on my Model 97 made around 1916 or 17? It was also used on the Model 1897 & the one before that. Believe me they are not easy to work on and if it's damaged beyond repair you have a problem. Sometimes someone will pull it back to feed the ammo and it will slip and fly to the front with full force and the follower will shoot out and damage the end of the tube. Bad news if that happened.

Gunscrew, yes it does look like yours. I have taken it apart and flipped it over so the latch is on the left side, looking at the muzzle. It still does the same thing, it is about 3/16 away from latching!

    rolandj,
So I took the magazine totally apart, took forearm off as well and found that the outer tube was hitting the receiver before latch hook-up. I took about a 1/64 of an inch off and reassembled, it latches fine now. Suspect someone had replaced the mag tube at some point in time and did not fit it to the gun!
