    Ultimate #8

I have a Rem #81 with Krieger conversion to detachable magazine in 300 Savage. I have been surfing the net looking for information and possibly a hi cap mag for it. That's when I came across this picture of a tricked out #8 Rem. It was a gun used by the Purvis Posse that was hunting down the bad guys in the 30s. Didn't say who used it or what caliber it was. Looks like a Thompson grip on the forend. Other pic is a local PD a couple counties above me that were tooling up to hunt down Pretty Boy Floyd. Purvis beat them to it. There was also a pic of Purvis's 9x57 Mannlicher that he scuffed one of the bad guys with. Spoon bolt and double set triggers. When Purvis shot somebody he did it with class. He is the guy that got Dillinger too.image.jpegimage.jpeg

Your preaching to the choir, my first Deer rifle was a #8 Rem 35cal. back in 1962. I have one #8 35cal and the one #81 300savage.
I went one season a couple years later with a 742c 30/06. Went back to 35s in 8-81 & 14-141 and stayed there since for main woods deer gun.

It doesn't look like Krieger made any high cap mags. I can't see the purpose of detachable magazines unless you have option of bigger mag. For hunting I don't feel the need for one but always wanted one to play with. I may look for a clunker to get a mag and fit it to the Kreiger. Then take a 308 mag from some AR type rifle with hi cap mag and hybridize it to the 81 mag. My dad did this with 742 mag in 30/06. He had the help of guys of the instrument shop at his plant. The 81 won't be that easy because of mag ending up flash with trigger guard and I don't have luxury of a instrument shop staff.

Saw a Model 81 in 300 Savage but some previous owned had D&Ted the receiver for a Williams peep. The LGS wanted too much for the rifle due to that fact. I wanted it but not for that price............

My 81 has a Redfield peep on the hump. Nice 8 and 81s are going for $600-$700 around here. Trouble is they are trying to get that out of not so nice ones too. It never fails that a selling point is , it's just like the gun that killed Bonney & Clyde.image.jpeg
