Learned many years back that it doesn't pay to let a hunting rifle hurt you! So, for years I have used a sand bag or sissy bag on the shoulder for anything above about the .243 level.

This allows me to shoot a lot of test loads from the bench without problems.

Oh, and I use a 465gr cast at 1650fps for my 45/70 loads.

My No. 1 is chambered for the 300 WinMag. I particularly liked the 300 in 125 grain Sierra for antelope on the plains of Colorado and 165 -180 grain Sierra's for deer and larger in the mountains. But that was when I was much younger and fit. Now the rifle makes it out annually or so to still put that firm "kick" to my shoulder. If there is a better hunting rifle than a Ruger No. 1 I have not need to know.

I have .22-250 (stainless), .257 Roberts, .35 Whelen, and .45-70, #1's. Still want a .300 Win. Mag. , and a .375 H&H. All are far more accurate than I am, and just about the only thing I hunt with now.

I have never owned a no. 1 , always liked them but even though I have owned other falling blocks I always thought , when I find a good used one I will buy it ! Well that never happened and over the past 5 years I have watched good used ones go from $ 650 to $ 1000+. Last year I seen one new in 338 Federal that I could have bought for about $ 700 and hesitated as I need another rifle like I need 6 wife's and the next day woke up and was going to get it and it was gone.
I will still one day own one but have not been lucky when it comes to Ruger No. 1 's.

With that caliber list you might want to consider a 9.3 x 62. I see them for sale once in a while. I have one in that caliber in a Hawkeye African. Big thump without a lot of recoil or blood shot meat.

That would be another on the list

I've always wanted one, but for the life of me, I can't justify the price these things bring. I never understood why they historically cost so much. I could buy a real nice bolt gun or lever gun for the price of a #1 single shot. I feel the same about the High Wall repros. and TC Contenders.

A bolt gun of similar quality costs just as much or more. What does a supergrade Win go for these days?

Well, my No. 1 stock for my No.3 45/70 is back from being checkered. I'll try to get some photos of the stock on the No.3 in the next year or so.

What kind of work is required to fit pistol grip to your #3?
