    Just me thinking out loud
I only had one 308, I've had four 30/06s. Since I shoot 150gr bullets there is no real difference in them. The 30/06 may be a better choice for 180gr and bigger bullets for Elk & Moose. I don't like to use a heavier bullet than I need. I had a 300mg for awhile and it did better with heavier bullets. They say if you can only have one 30cal get a 300mg. I say unless you are hunting heavy game only that makes sense. You can load it down to a 30/30 if you want to. I would go for 30/06 it's more practical in my opinion. With the right charge and bullet a 06 will handle about anything in North America.

I would try the 30-06, 338-06 or 35 whelen. The 30-06 case can do it all. Never been a fan of magnums myself either but I have owned a few. 35 Whelen would get my vote as it is fairly cast friendly and even cheap 357 magnum pills could be used for plinking,

I've had four of the doggone things. 25-06, 7mm Rem mag, 300 Win mag, and still have the 375 H&H mag. It's a keeper.

Have shot three black bear with it, carried it for elk and deer. Sometimes wish I'd only had a Number One for my rifle.

    Regards, Guy

I am looking for a 375H&H. A #1 would be one I would be interested in. I had a small collection of 375s. I had a Sako I bought new in
60s. I carried it a lot and got to loading 235gr bullets and using it for deer anyplace I would use a scoped BA. I didn't shoot the others that often. Then I sold of about 3doz rifles I decided I wouldn't use anymore. Like a dummy I sold the Sako. The only one I really regret selling. I don't need a 375H&H anymore, got no excuse I just feel naked without one. I'm not interested in any new production rifles whatever 375 I get has to have class. A #1 passes that test. Besides I got several hundred bullets that will go to waste if I don't get another 375H&H.

I wanted one for a long, long time, but never could settle on the Calibre. A buddy of mine bought one, then decided he didn't want it (never even fired it!) - so it came home with me!
It's a #1A in 6.5x55 Swede. Stainless action/barrel and one beautiful piece of walnut for the stock (BOTH fore and aft).
I'm looking for another #1A in 30-06, but the wood has got to be at least as good as that on the Swede.
If you're only hunting the Lower 48, I say go with the 30-06. Heaven knows the ole '06 has accounted for darn near everything!

30-06 is a good choice. The 26" barrel can pick up a bit of speed. I bought one in 1970 at the PX. Very accurate with any loads.

Today I might choose a 45-70. Usable for about any hunting with the right loads and within its limitations of range.
