I guess I will get some pistol primers
Dawg... how did you get the (taller) rifle primers to seat flush ?
ps: If you're going to get new primers, get the softer/hotter Federals.
(Use them for everything except gas guns)

like others have said try pistol primers, that is likely your problem. if it shoots factory then it has to be the primer. also if you can get them federal primers are softer than anything else, although if all is well it shouldn't matter what brand of pistol primer.

I use CCI Large Pistol Primers im my 44 Mag. No problems.
For $3-4 it would be worth to try. I don't like problems.

People say money can't buy happiness But it can buy me a Marlin and ammo to shoot in it, dies, powder bullets...

I got some Federal Large Pistol primers today and loaded up 25. going to see if that solves the problem tomorrow. I also load up a few more with the large rifle to use as a comparison. May have access to another 44 rifle also. hopefully we can eliminate all the variables.

A LR primer is .008 inch taller than a LP primer and the LR primer is also a thicker cup. Though it is possible to seat a LR primer flush with a large pistol case, I suspect the firing pin of the rifle just hasn't the ump needed crush the LR primer against the primer anvil for proper ignition. I thought the LR primer was a hotter primer than the LP primer. If that is correct, and I don't know if it is, I just wonder what kind of pressure you are unknowingly creating in your gun. There's a reason everyone says follow the load data...safety.

Dawg, (for want of anything else to do until the weekend)
have you checked firing pin protrusion yet?

Even without calipers, the diameter of a standard paperclip at
30-thousandths can give you a good idea if you've got the req'd
    55-60-thou on the pin.

Went to the range this morning. Results as as follows

    Borrowed gun
15 of 15 on large rifle primers no issues
5 of 5 on large pistol primers no issues

    my gun
3 of 5 on large rifle misfire (light strikes)
20 of 20 large pistol no issues

    LRP were CCI
    LPP were Federals

    Borrowed gun JM model
    Mine a Remlin

I am guessing the issue was incorrect primers. Thanks for the info and suggestions.

Just a thought to keep in mind - just because you are shooting them in a rifle - the 44 Mag is a pistol cartridge - I would never recommend that someone use rifle primers in a pistol cartridge - even if they work in 'some guns'
