    Ranch Dog's Plain Base Bullets

Last year for a period of a couple of months, I offered a plain base option with a mold purchase. About 100 molds left the shop and I'm interested in hearing how it worked out for you. I truly do not mind hearing the bad along with any good.

In a nutshell, I discontinued the service because of the time involved. Anyone that has ordered from me know that I take quite a bit of pride in getting your purchase to you pronto. I'm like a dog with a bone with this because I hate to order an item and wait for it. That quirk caused a lot of stress in getting the orders out each day as there was a lot of back and forth set up with the reamers. Simply, a lot of wasted setup time with the different reamers each day.

If I could get some feedback on how this service with these designs worked out for the caster/shooter, I might consider offering the service again. The only thing I would change would be to hold the orders for one set day each week and do them all at once. This would save quite a bit of repeat setup vs. doing it daily.

The tumble lube grooves lend itself to doing this work quite well as the bevel of the reamer does quite a good job of matching the aft groove.

If I went back to offering this service, I would maintain my previous choices of either all the cavities PB'd or a 3X3 split. This would avoid any confusion in the process of cutting 5 cavities for one order and 2 on other, etc. Plus, while I was cutting one design, I could always cut a few to shelve for future orders. The service would be offered for a flat $10 on top of the price of the mold.

So, the bottom-line is how did the cut work out for your?

I didn't get in on the plain base offer you had before because I was just getting into casting. Now that I have a better idea of what I want and what I'm doing I would be interested in some 3x3 molds. Alot of my loads I don't feel I shoot them fast enough to justify the gas check but would still like the option.

    Thanks for reconsidering this again.

Thanks Key for responding. I suspect that I would offer a method for an individual to return a mold and have it plain based (3 or all) for just the cost of the postage.

    Michael,
At this time l have all the RD molds l need for all my guns and paper patch them all. ( The .224 so far just doesn't get acceptable accuracy................YET .)
l wouldn't be interested in sending any mold back to get PB'ed but l may just buy more molds and get all cav's PB if l decide to shoot some other than PP. THANKS for your continued interest in things that make us smile

    Hi Michael

I really love my 3x3 350-460 mold I got from you. The versatility of being able to create both plain base and gas check from the same mold is fantastic. Although the 45/70 is the only rifle I cast for at the moment, if I got another rifle I wanted to cast for I wouldn't hesitate to to get another one from you in any caliber. For any other locals on MO, getting the molds sent over here was zero problem.

Just a couple of links to range reports I did with the plain base projectiles

I just had a long range Soule sight fitted to my 45/70 so hopefully early next year I will start pushing the 350 pb projectiles out to 500m to see if I can upset a few steel rams, so a range report as soon as I can get some experimentation done.

Thanks again for a good product.

I have a .432-265gr 3X3 mold and I have used the pb with my light loads and Unique and the things sing in my gun...the gas checks are cranked up with H110 and I have hit more then one ground hog over 200yards...with factory iron sights and .44mag thats darn impressive!!
you keep making them and I will keep buying them Michael!
